Fran's mother was a makesup saleswoman for a living, you know, like an Avon lady. That's part of the joke in Strictly Ballroom--with all the obsession about the dancing, these were people with regular, boring day-to-day lives just like the rest of us (there was also a very subtle side joke about Tina Sparkle's partner retiring so he could focus on his lawn and garden business...same type of jab.)

It can be believed that Fran having those products helped clear up her skin. As for her overall look, it was part of her transformation from ugly duckling into swan thanks to the liberation she felt by learning to dance with Scott. Just your typical fantastical fairy-tale type symbolism.

Actually, she ran the dancing school as well as selling makeup, it's not clear which actually put bread on her family's table. But it sure looks like she needed to hustle wherever she could, because as far as the viewer can tell she was supporting her husband and grown son!

Really, why doesn't Scott have a job?

reply

lol i wondered that myself. even wayne and clarry are mechanics or something and the other guy is a spa salesman. yeah everyone had a job except scott. and the kids obviously. tina and sheryl were hairdressers i think.

First of all remember that Mama's "stage mother" obsession is having him win this big championship so she was making sure that he had all the time necessary to practice. That of course would, she thought, make up for missing out herself but remember, too, that having the champion teaching at your school would be a big coup. That sort of explains the comment Wayne's partner makes before they tell Les that the fix is in for Tina Sparkle to win the Championship. It really will affect business if none of them can possibly win. No fix and the drunk who is dancing with Tina may blow it for her, Scott may blow it for himself, and that makes the whole thing a "crap shoot" for the rest of the contestants. Probably more than the filmmakers had in mind but as I considered your question it put that filmed question into some perspective for me.

Everyone needed as much income as they could get -- those sparkly costumes don't come cheap, you know!

Sokka: My first girlfriend turned into the moon.
Zuko: That's rough, buddy.

it could also be as simple as Fran becoming happy. It's a well-known fact that stress (read as unhappiness) can ruin your skin as well as many other things. Dancing with the one she wanted seemed to make her very happy.

I was confused with the title of this thread at first. I thought you meant Fran and Scott have the same mother... lol!
