Things we can learn from 'Strictly Ballroom'

I saw this kind of topic on another's movie board, and I thought it was very interesting and insightfull! And also, very entertaining!

So, lets begin! We can learn from watching SB that:

- "A life lived with fear... is a life half lived." (The most obvious! lol)

- To say (and sometimes yell) to a good looking guy that he is a "gutless wonder" can be really powerful. Can make him to accept to dance with you, or even to chase after you to explain how things are not exactly how you think they are.

- Sometimes, to take-off your glasses might help. In many levels!

- A Coca-cola sign can be very romantic! Specially as a background shining at the moonlight or at the sunset, remembering you to just ENJOY!

- The so called "weirdos" always have secrets. Great ones, by the way!

- "To pretend to be in love" is a great and dangerous exercise! Sometimes can actually lead you to really fall in love with somebody.

- Second chances. Even when a guy tells you that the whole history of " The Rumba is the dance of love" is just pretend, he may end up realizing latter that he was mistaken about that.

- To dance "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps" on the backstage of a Dance Competition, without saying a single word, can be a very nice way to say "I love you".

- One should never say to a spanish group that one knows how to dance the pasodoble!!!

- To show yourself open to learn the pasodoble from your beloved one's grandma it's really nice! Can make you win her entire family and friends, including her furious dad.

- When a grandma suddenly interrups a moment between you and her granddaughter, saying "you are ready, kids!", she may actually be: 1) saving you from a beating, cause the girl's dad is right there; 2) telling you, in a subtile way, that you two are really ready for each other... in every levels! So, catch this, took the girl outside, and finally make your move!

- To be kissed by the guy you love, at evening, near to a barbedwire fence, with the wind gently blowing, is very, very romantic!!!

- The term "bogo pogo" can be very annoying. Specially when it came up right in the midle of a perfectly sweet and tender kiss...

(P.s.: Sorry for my quite bad english!)

lol, some very good things to learn!

I'll add one: When you like someone, your grandmother can point out how cute he is, and flirt with him in Spanish, and totally get away with it!

They aren't called rednecks! They are called Appalachian Americans!

reply

Hello, my darling! Thanks for your reply!

I absolutely loved your addition to the list! ("Granny rules!" lol)

reply

lol, I loved her grandma!

Another thing we can learn from Strictly Ballroom:

Everybody, just get up and dance, and we will all have a happy ending!

reply

How great is that for the real life, ham?!

"Everybody, just get up and dance, and we will all have a happy ending!"

Excelent!!!

reply

That it's the dancing that matters.

reply

That sadistic teachers can completely ruin a good movie by analysing it...and analysing it...and analysing it...for an entire term.

-The eyes are open, the mouth is moving, but mr brain has long since departed-

1.Show me you Pase Doble. Show me your Pase Doble!

2. Grandma says "Nice body!"

3. They're gonna cut the bloody music!

reply

I thoroughly enjoyed this message board. Thanks for the laughs!!

that you can turn an extremely attractive girl into one with a really unpleasant skin issue!!! It's simply amazing! - She's been written about in several places and considered to be extremely attractive yet, there are few, if any, pictures available of her...

reply

the most important thing:
learn everything and then start from scratch in your own way

that is to say: be humble and trust teaching and traditions but don't stop your creativity and express yourself freely

I think they showed this message in all the nuances, tradition (paso doble), too strict rules (the school, the competition), early need of free expression (the pupils at the school), courage in free expression (fran and scott), wise and complete free expression (doug's secret dance)

-It's a good idea to bring the dress you fixed up for your granddaughter "just in case".

-Being told the rumba is pretend by the guy you like and have been dancing the rumba with is REALLY AWKWARD!

-Dancing to the rhythm will win over a girl's hard-arse father.

-Just because "not now Dad" usually works doesn't mean you're not eventually going to have your dad screaming in your face.

-It's fun to say something about someone in front of them in a language they can't understand. ("Nice body!") :P

-If Mrs Hastings says a look is "you" it's most definitely NOT you.

"Screw you guys, I'm going home!"

- Before you audition to be someone's new partner, you should really work on your body flight.

- Don't kiss someone and then immediately groan and start grumbling about the bogo pogo. It is not romantic.

- You don't need music to dance the paso doble.

- You should stand by your husband, even when Barry Fife is trying to convince you that you can't win.

- Before you lie to someone about where their partner went, you should make sure everyone has the story straight.

- Hair ornaments are useful for throwing at people to get their attention.

Spanish spoken with an Australian accent is a unique sound.

Flashbacks to the past make you look cartoony.

Doug Hastings could do anything ... ANYTHING!

Where the man goes, the lady must follow.

Hair sprayed stiff is more aerodynamic for ballroom dancing.

Watch out for Mr. Fife, he'll bogo pogo your dance partner and rock that toupee!

Conversing while dancing the tango and yelling "Arms, Claree!" is hilarious!

Sedagive?!!!

reply

I've learned to keep my happy face on!

And..... ARMS, CLARRY!

"Yeu are da wan who is spowsed to be telling stories about biers det go shahh-ping!"

reply

How about...
You don't need a big budget to make a great movie!
