Ernest?

What happened to Ernest, Alice's (Jasmine Guy) husband? Thanks. I appreciate it.

He joined something that was like the Army. He was either killed or he abandoned her. All I know is he suddenly stopped sending her money. I thought the way her story ended was the saddest of them all. I LOOOOOOOOOOVED that movie!

he didn't stop sending the money, in the letter she sent Esther right before she died, she was complaining that she got money from him but no words, she didn't know where he was at all...

I think that she died more from Loneliness and this feeling of being abondoned by the man she loved and for whom she gave up a lil bit of her life, than from the TB disease.

The Husband joined something like the military to get money to support his wife, as he was not able to hold a job in the city for more than a week.

When they learned of Alice's death, her friends said it wasn't Ernest fault that his wife died of sickness alone and sick! But i beg to differ, he had all the good intentions for Alice but all the wrong instincts as to what to do and how to support himself and how...

You don't propose when you're unable to put your life together!!!
He Should not have married her, she would have stayed with one of her friend and when she got sick they would have taken care of her...

And actually how do you let your wife sick like that and alone, you don't even call one of her friend to say, look i am going away to get money for her, can you look after her? The woman is sick, alone and he doesn't even write, he just sends money? What kind of love is that?

Sometimes you might love someone, who loves you back but despite all the best intentions coming from that person, she or he can be very bad for you... you need to pass or take a rain check on that love let alone marriage proposal!!!

Alice was so idealistic about love and it got the best of her, i don't know if they cut in postproduction but the fact there is no scenes showing her strucgle with TB alone with no one for moral or emotional support.

By The Way:
the fact that there is no scenes to show Alice alone fighting disease alone Obliges to imagine what it could have been like for her... emotionaly it's powerful, that's a great move by Debbie Allen

Ernest did have the best intentions and loved Alice, it just wasn't enough, I mean, she ended up working in a laundry facory with all those chemicals, bad fumes, she should have just stayed a housekeeper w/ that white family.

And the son of the family really liked Alice for herself, I mean, he could have given her a decent life, if she so desired, but like Dorothy, knew it wouldn't work in the real world.

I hate it that Ernest left Alice and she got sick. She was my fave character.
