Alien or Demon

Is the creature in this film Alien or of this world. The characters in the film speak of it as if it is some kind of demon that collects souls. Not a creature from a distant planet.

MY GUESS IS ITS NONE OF THE ABOVE i am thinking its a mutation given the polution level and its probably a safe bet that there was tons of toxic waste that leaked out and had mutated rat and human dna remember it takes the dna of the its victims and of its survivors and they become psychicly linked to him

reply

Actually fellas, its supposed to be the devil. Watch the movie and play close attention.

I recken if they made the ugly thing more demon, then alien - then it would of been a better movie.

I tought the movie was Brilliant, but then it's head was alien-ish.

so how many demons / aliens have you met to date then possesed?

all your doing is comparing a stero-typical view of one movie monster culture with another

i still love this movie and its hard to think its now 17years old

reply

I agree that it is neither.

Precisely. And also, we can assume that it is a genetic mutation (due to the futuristic pollution levels) that simply believes it is a demon of some sort.

Very nice ambiguity there.. ;-

It's a creature that believed itself to be Satan. My guess is it was a rogue demon that just wished he was. Either way, it certainly loved to tease Stone! ;)

reply

Good call, if it WAS Satan himself, there's no way he'd have gotten slagged by a normal human cop, Rutger Hauer or not. I always figured it to be a composite of mutated DNA with psychic abilities. It never displayed any supernatural powers other than the psychic powers, and the absorbing DNA trait, heck, that's nothing new. Been done in all the Alien films, and they weren't demons. It's just how they evolved. Eating hearts might have something to do with that whole taking victims and rats' DNA.

reply

From the dialog in the movie I would guess it's a mutation rather than an alien or demon.

reply

It's been a while but if my memory serves me, Durkin says he's been reading all kinds of books and concluded it was a demon (not Satan) by the symbol found on the ceiling. He referenced the symbol to the Chinese calendar "year of the rat". It ate the beating heart of it's victim in order to capture their soul or something to that effect. All I know is it most definitely was not an alien.

When Harley pulls out it's heart you can clearly hear screams. I think that implies the monster is some sort of soul eater or whatever, so i'd say it's a demon of some sort.

reply

Yes that scene clearly implies that BUT. The ending was directed by another director than the rest of the film so I just ignore it because imho it doesn't really fit in. The implication of souleating that is.

I always thought It was A Mutant of some kind that was able to add other beings DNA to its physical make up. Either It started out as Human and whilst Living in the sewer Rat DNA was added its genetic structure (Rats were the most abundant living thing in the sewer) or it was a Rat that mutated and it gained its human understanding (like the ability to use a gun) from the memories of its victims. The whole thing of it Thinking its the Devil would suggest that it was either Human once (there fore it has a concept of the devil) Or it can obtain memories/understanding from its victims (who would have had a concept of the devil).

reply

I don't think Alien would be able to write, send packages, start motorcycles and do all the humane stuff the thing did.

And yeah, I thought the monster design was too much like H.R Giger's Alien.

reply

the creature was a demon with make up like HR giger's Alien

reply

Especially when you finally see the thing and it's claws are so impossibly huge it couldn't possibly write, send packages. But it definitely COULD rip your heart out.

Plus was it wearing goggles or what?

reply

Seemed able to operate a shotgun with some alacrity, too.
