Why had I never heard of this movie?

It never came on Home Box Office, Showtime, Cinemax, the Movie Channel, Starz, the SyFy channel, USA networks, Turner Network Television or broadcast stations, to the best of my knowledge. Weird. I've seen Screamers, Trancers, Runaway, Cyborg, Guyver, Millennium, The Hidden, Avenging Force, Prison Heat, I Come in Peace, Escape from LA and Night of the Comet but not Split Second for some reason. Weird.

Shame. It's a good flick. Watching on YouTube right now :)

O, I've seen it now. It's on Hulu Plus. I didn't think about YouTube, though.

Did you like it?

I have a hunch that you don’t think about much of anything.

Just one of those lost gems I guess, I don’t think Rutger Hauer is famous enough to make a movie well known.

It did show up on a movie channel at one point in the mid 90's, but I can't recall which one I saw it on (unless I'm misremembering, which is entirely possible). But yeah, it's one of those that spent a very short time in a few theaters (I actually saw it when it was release theatrically in a theater in Oceanside CA when I was in the USMC out there), and then barely a hint of it later on.

It was on VHS, however, and I rented it a couple times.

Side note: my uncle (John Shipp), who was a film buyer in the 70's (check out The Film Peddler on Amazon Prime for an ultra low budget documentary my brother and I did about him) and is largely responsible for the concept of mass marketing and releasing (until the big companies caught wind of the idea and ran him over), knows the two guys who bought Split Second for theatrical release

They also peddled A Midnight Clear, which recently finally got a Blu Ray release from Shout Factory, and the abominable Highlander II, which they lost major money on (for obvious reasons), along with several other lower budget productions. I interviewed them in 2019 for another documentary about people in the business, but COVID has (probably permanently) delayed that project.

The hope was to get as many of the old codgers recorded and telling their stories as possible before they all die off.

In case you're interested in checking out The Film Peddler:
