Best Hood Movie?

I’ll come right out and say it. Even though I haven’t seen EVERY hood movie there is, I’m putting this one as a personal favorite and arguably the best one of all time.

Most people say Boyz in tha Hood or Menace II Society or Do the Right Thing, and those are great, but to me South Central had the best theme and lesson for its audience: listen to your father when he tries to teach you right way.

Yes other hood movies touch upon uplifting themes such as this in their own ways, but with OG Bobby Johnson going through a complete character arc and then a similar arc happening to his son JROCK, it really drove home the movies message and left nothing to question. Other hood movies are more ambiguous:

Boyz: The hood is the hood. People need to do right but hell the world doesn’t care, so why should we?

Menace: Care whether or not you live or die before it’s too late.

Juice: If you start doing the crime, better stay top dog or you’ll get killed by someone trying to be too dog.

Do the Right Thing: Try and do the right thing even though no one else does.

Like all these movies but South Central gets way overlooked even though it’s imo the most valuable hood movie to the black community and any one else, especially males.

Totally agree. This movie is underrated when it comes to the hood movie genre and I love the redemption arc with Bobby.

That said I still say Boyz in the Hood is best.
My takeaways are -
There are a lot of messages moreso than the others and are spread between characters that
-importance of parenting
-education
-consequences
-Jealousy
-self hate
.. .. More

MiiS - agree, change your ways sooner than later.

Juice - power corrupts

DTRT - be kind to others, increase peace, etc.

I like to add Paid in Full - greed, pride and lack of discipline will be your downfall. Similar message to MiiS.

South Central it goes full circle though and Bobby is doing what Ali said has to happen - break the cycle. Definitely one of my favorite of the bunch.
