It's originally a play. It's a battle of wits, of crafty repartees, of historical allusions between two huge historical figures (Talleyrand and Fouché) in France as they are deciding whether the new regime should be a republic or a monarchy. Talleyrand tries to convince Fouché that Louis XVIII should be the next sovereign («L'avenir, aujourd'hui, c'est le passé», "The future, today, is the past.")
