I have always been told two condoms weakens the condoms and that raises the risk of an STD. I'm sure people are aware of that now and this was the late 80's when all this happened.

Correct - Using 2 condoms together break down each condom. Since both condoms breakdown, it's as if not using any condom at all.

I'd have preferred they omitted this scene. As stated above it's not medically accurate, plus it was a little more explicit than I felt suitable for the comfort of many viewers.
