Ahead of its time

I think most people who watch this movie for the first time these days don't consider the fact that it was made about 4 or 5 years before the true explosion of the internet. In 1992 just about the only way people outside of the computer science industry would use the internet was at a college library. People would look up books and maybe - MAYBE - they would be able to go onto the usenet or Delphi forums to exchange ideas and thoughts. College student might have had an email address which was given to them by the university, and they would check their email at the library every once in a while. But in 1992 that was rare and that was about it as far as personal usage.

The movie basically forecasts the explosion of computer networking and digital technology which took place in the mid-90s and became part of daily life. And the best part is that it holds up to today. Granted, if it were to be remade to take place at this time a good deal of it would need to be re-written to account for mobile technology in a bunch of scenes. But overall, the foundation of the story and script could remain the same.

"Its all about who controls the information"

more relevent now than ever

Exactly. And this movie was built upon that whole mentality so well.

I just don't think this movie is recognized for being ahead of its time. Again, it was created in 1992 ! If it was made about 5 years later I wouldn't be saying that. By that time people were much more into the "information technology" frame of mind. A great deal changed between 1992-1997.

Yeah. The people who wrote this knew more about the technology than most screenwriters who took on the subject in the 90s.
