Just rewatched it last night for probably the 15-20th time. Love that movie.

But it would still be handy for spying on other countries- just not Russians or those who use Russian computer codes, as far as I can tell.

Actually, I think it's kind of left ambiguous as Marty specifically refers to Greg's comment as it applies to the Russian codes.

"I keep thinking about something Greg told me. He said our codes were based on an entirely different system than the Russian codes, so this box really wouldn't work on them. The only thing it would be good for is spying on Americans."

So does Marty's comment imply that it would (globally) ONLY work on Americans or that it would only work on Americans in relation to (just) the Russians?

Does this imply that every country uses its own codes and the box wouldn't work on the Israelis, the Japanese or the Germans?
I'm OK with it either way. But it seems Marty's statement above can be taken one of those two ways.

What it certainly implies is that the black box would be VERY valuable to pretty much any party interested on spying on Americans and "reading the FBI's mail".

I'm not trying to stretch the plot or change the narrative at all. I'm really more inquiring about the concept of code-breaking, out of my own ignorance on the subject.
So it really wasn't "THE codebreaker" as Bishop implies. Still a powerful terrorist weapon against the U.S., I suppose. But it really didn't perform with the elegant solution that Janek was talking about in his lecture.

The bit rate for todays encryption has more than doubled since then, but who knows how that algorithm works, It’s nice that the details weren’t revealed too much. That speed on their bruteforce attacks, on a 56k dial up, is still ridiculously fast.

In comparison, all the tech jargon in Mission Impossible ’96 seems so outdated. Swordfish ‘01 is finally current, so that won’t last long.

Only the gear and infrastructure in Sneakers, leaves it stranded in the mid 90s. As it should be. Still a great movie overall.

Who said the president can control it or not. I doubt they listen to their higher ups. These people are rogue & we need a new Church Committee to clip their balls.

Remember the guy who allegedly tried to bomb Time Square back in 2010 or something like that? Some Arab or Pakistani guy?

I remember reading an article around the time that it happened that the guy he sold his house to in the mid 2000s was approached by the FBI. The FBI publicly claimed they didn't know about this guy before but they clearly had him under surveillance of some sort.

I don't know why all the recent news about NSA spying on Americans is even treated as news. It's been going on for more than 20 years. Having said that, this movie is still very timely, more than 20 years later.

It's being treated as news because Snowden provided the proof that is wasn't just idle talk from the tinfoil hat crowd.

Exactly!

Plus, the Sneakers are professionals who do their best to keep a low profile, whereas Snowden is a narcissistic media whore. So there's no comparison there.

I don't know if you're a detective or a pervert.
