Does Whoopi actually sing herself?

I'm not sure if this has been addressed somewhere else, but I was wondering if Whoopi sang herself on the soundtrack? Or did she have someone else sing it for her. I have NEVER heard Whoopi sing, but the voice does sound like it could be hers. Also, I read somewhere that Whoopi played the role of mother superior in the musical for a few nights. And that role requires lots of singing:p

yes

Yeah. Her singing voice isn't great, but it's passable. If they wanted to bother to dub in a singer for her they would've found a professional singer with a great voice, like they did for Wendy Makkena (Sister Mary Robert).

Actually, it's much more than passable.
She sings in tune, bending just enough notes to be interesting and not overdoing it; she has a fine sense of rhythm, she breathes in the right spots, she holds out the vowels where they need holding out... in short, she does everything a good singer is supposed to do.

True, she does not have an operatic quality - and thank goodness! I would rather have her lack of vibrato than have too much. She has a natural, not-overly-trained voice with a pleasant "down home" feel to it.
When she was in the Moonlight Lounge, she (rather her character) was pretty much "phoning in" her performance - but when Delores was with the nuns, even as she taught them to sing better, she was inspired to do so herself.
Which, of course, is what the character was supposed to do.
... and Whoopi was up to it. (That is why she did not need to be dubbed by anyone else.)

Most of all...
She Sells the songs she sings. That is the best any vocalist worth her salt can ask for.

Preach it!

"Baba Booey! Baba Booey!"

She sings herself. She also sings in the movie Boys on the side if you want to compare.

Perhaps not at a real pro level, but Whoopi Goldberg's singing is good. She did get a good feel of those songs I thought.

I thought it was someone else!

I've checked to see if I could find a dubbing singer for Whoopi Goldberg on the remainder-cast page. And the trivia page. I didn't spot anything about Whoopi being dubbed in the film. The singer might still remain uncredited , if someone else did do those singing parts.
