What was the deal with the foreign dude in the beginning?

I'm talking about Luiz, the man who deceives Linda. Was he really a foreigner? If so, was he just trying to dupe someone into marrying him for a green card? I just don't get what his deal was and the reason for his deception.

Also don't know why Linda doesn't confront him in the bar, if for no other reason than to alert the new woman he was with that he's a fake.

We don't really know whether he was truly a foreigner or not (probably not) and given that he is not a main character it doesn't really matter what his deal was. That whole scenario was about Linda's story, not about his; ultimately we were just being shown what type of events have led to her issues.

I have seen other posts here in which people state that Linda should have gone up to him to do X/Y/Z and I don't really understand why. What would her making a scene like that in such a scenario accomplish? We don't know who that woman is, we don't even know who HE is and neither does Linda. Confronting him wouldn't help her--it would just make her look like a foolish, crazy woman freaking out in a bar. Confronting him would not somehow rescue the woman he was with from anything (if she even needs rescuing--again, we don't know who she is or what she knows), it's unlikely that in a setting like that anything would even be resolved unless they all take a walk outside to talk, which clearly ain't gonna happen...I just don't get why people think she should have done something.

It's not like she was married to the guy, it was a random dude she barely even know whose lame schtick worked on her (an easy, gullible woman). This scenario should have served as a much needed lesson for her, nothing more.

While what you say is technically true about the 'other woman', the reasonable implication is that she is yet another victim for Luiz and not someone like his sister. The reason we know this is because Luiz pretends not to know Linda when he is spotted. If the other woman was not another mark, Luiz would have introduced her. He was working another scam. Also, he said he was going back abroad and that was obviously a lie.

Would Linda have accomplished anything by confronting Luiz in the bar? Hard to say. Chances are she would have blown his cover and alerted the latest victim. That's something, at least.

I also think it's kind of funny that the actor who played Luiz is now a psychotherapist living in London. Seems he is still getting inside peoples' heads....lol.

He was just using it as an excuse to sleep with girls without them expecting any type of commitment.

From memory it was Linda who suggested marriage (and only to her friend), not Luiz.

Yes, most likely. So why didn't Linda confront him in the bar? Knowing that she's a fairly emotional person, her reaction in that scene did not make sense in the film.

A fragile, emotional woman, who seconds earlier had her heart broken, not being up to the task of openly and publicly confronting the guy who did it? Yeah that makes no sense, moviefool.

It seemed like an awful lot of work to go thru just to have sex with a girl; that guy could just get laid anyway. The ring and the sketch and the "My Visa expires..." why all the trouble?

He put on that whole charade just to get her in bed. Combined with the solid excuse why he needs to break up with her. Kind of over the top, but it worked to a tee. Just should have decided to go to different bars for a while.

The thing was, I didn't buy that guy being from Spain or a foreigner in general. Could they at least show him speaking Spanish a few times?

She didn't need to say anything to him at the bar. His facial expression said it all. Basically: "Hey, It is what it is.. "

Yes, HIS reaction was perfect but her's wasn't. Not in her character just to walk on by. She would have put him in his place, or walked back in to do it later.

Strange moment in an otherwise great flick.

It wasn't complicated. He was probably legit a student from Spain, but all of his talk about the visa etc. was a line of bullshit he fed local girls he wanted to fuck. He'd hook them, pump them for a while, and then dump them when we was tired of them and needed to make room in his schedule for fresh meat.
