Why was Ally so disturbed by seeing Hedy masturbating?

She stopped and saw her and was looking as if Hedy was doing something disturbing. Lol she was just masturbating, everyone does it. I mean if she saw her and stared for a second and looked away quickly, fine. But she stood there watching with this dark music playing as if Hedy was doing something demented and psychotic.

Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age.

LOL. I'm not too sure on that either- maybe it was because she left her door open. Seems like most people would close their door when there are others in the house..

Don't wake me 'cuz I'm dreamin' of angels on the moon...

reply

Well the door wasn't exactly wide open, it was just cracked open. Besides Ally's reaction wouldn't have been justified either way, even if the door was wide open it wouldn't make what Hedy was doing disturbing or anything. Plus it was like 12am or 2 in the morning everyone was asleep and the door was just cracked open.

I think the filmmakers just wanted to present masturbating as some sinful evil thing that you shouldn't do.

I thought she was just embarrassed at getting caught. Masterbating is not wrong, but she was watching her and invading her privacy.

reply

I think she was so disturbed because earlier Hedy had just walked into Allies room right after she and Sam had just finished doing the dirty and Hedy was half naked at that point too.

So for Alison to then catch her masturbating was a little creepy, she'd probably never caught her before and most likely thought Hedy had been turned on by her and Sam or just naked sweaty Sam in the bed sheets.

That's just my take on it.

reply

I agree. I completely took it as she was masturbating to the thought of Allie and Sam having sex and Allie knew this and that is why it was so creepy. Not the act itself.

The last time I saw this movie was over 10 years ago but I'm watching it now as if its my first time.

I'm 35mins into the movie and have decided that Allie is a weak, insecure, prude. I don't like her.

Allie thought she could get away with using somebody as stop gap until things got better (in her life), she met another man, or she got back with Sam. A bit like Fatal Attraction, it is a tale of a complacent person who had no regard for feelings or needs of others, hence used everyone around them and paid the ultimate price, because human beings are not to be toyed with like vacuous, opake objects. Allie and the Michael Douglas character in FA were the most vacuous characters in their respective films, and each paid the price for their tardiness.

Psycho alert ☝🏻

I've always thought that was such a weird, unnecessary part of the movie. I think they just wanted to show Jennifer Jason Leigh masturbating.

reply

And I thank them for it LOL She may not be the prettiest actress around, but there's something really sexy about her. Plus her tits are mouthwatering!

reply

I agree, who care if it's totally "necessary"? The psycho rampage at the end is pretty unbelievable and unnecessary, but I've never seen a movie RUINED by a nice female masturbation scene. I'd say the problem is more that JJ Leigh is just gratuitously hot and sexy for this mousy role, but 1. she's a great actress, 2. they needed her to be really sexy as well as an over-the-top psycho at the end. Obviously, this is trying to be a conventional Hollywood thriller as opposed to completely realistic movie.

I think Allie was just very self-absorbed and assumed Hedy was masturbating because of her and her boyfriend. Maybe she was, but the Allie character is not particularly likeable, perhaps intentionally so?

I thought it was not so much that Allie was disturbed to see Hedy masturbating but that from the angle, for a moment it looked like Hedy was in bed with someone (if you look at the scene again, it does look like Hedy's on top of someone). Allie was thus thinking for a split second, "Who is she with? Where did he come from?" and yes, she did continue to look because I think she wanted to know who this guy was who was in her apartment, but then Hedy turns over and Allie sees that she's alone which surprised her.

"He murders his wife every night. Other than that, I think he's pretty harmless."

Not "her" apartment "their" apt.

reply

Seeing as how Hedy wasnt on the lease, and couldn't be caught living there, it actually was Allie's apartment.

I think when Allison heard Hedra moaning in her bed, she at first did not know what was going on. She might have thought Hedra was having abdominal pain or something and so went in to see if she could help - like give her some medicine. After knowing what Hedra was doing, Allison got curious/interested and continued to watch.

Note that Allison was always in the habit of snooping around. For examples, she tried Hedra's perfume and looked inside her drawers - in other words, definitely not a good roommate or someone to share an apartment with.

I think it was supposed to be like Hedy was aware that Alli and Sam were having sex that night and she wanted to get some too lol.. it's weird
