How did Douglas' character come to be involved with Richardson's character and trust her enough to involve her with Griffith's character in the plot?

SPOILER: She obviously turns on them, but I was wondering how they might have become involved in the first place?

Margrete Von Eberstein was Sunflower's niece. Linda Voss stated on the train that Sunflower had become a double agent around the time she was born. I would say that Ed Leland was introduced to Margrete Von Eberstein thru his spy connections to her uncle Sunflower. This is probably the reason he trusted her.
