One of the worst pieces of casting ever

Melanie Griffith, a Swedish/Anglo-American (i.e. WASP) baby-voiced rich girl was supposed to be a working class half-Jewish woman (and her WASP boss was incidentally played by half-Jewish Michael Douglas). This is a woman who was so cosseted and clueless about racial oppression she actually said the following on making the movie: "6 million Jews died [in the Holocaust]? I didn't know that. That's a lot of people" thanks for that perceptive observation Mel...

And to think, this role could have gone go Debra Winger, a brilliant actress, who is Jewish. Apparently she screen-tested for the part. Winger must have been having an off-day because there's no way a sane filmmaker would choose that blonde bimbo Griffith over the consummately superlative Winger, unless the latter gave a particularly bad screen-test.

Personally,if not Winger, who I think is an amazing actress, I'd have chosen Ellen Barkin, who is another brilliant working-class Jewish actress and possessed even more sex appeal than Winger.
