Melanie Griffith was the wrong choice - for an interesting movie.

The movie was painful to watch - straight out - Melanie's idiotic mumbling and stumbling through the movie had me on the fast forward. I came to this movie through wikipdia via: V2, V1. Operation Crossbow is much better.

I like Sophia Loren very much and tried several times to watch "Operation Crossbow", but found it very boring. No comparison to "Shining through"!

They should have cast Ellen Barkin or Debra Winger. They should now re-adapt the book with Scarlett Johanssen.

Promote Joely Richardson

Michelle Pfeiffer would have been more convincing.

Melanie Griffith has never been a good actress. God only knows how she won an award for "Working Girl". Terrible, one note, baby-voiced, bland....would have been better with a different actress, although I love this movie and think it is one of my all-time very favorites.

I too love the movie and think it would have benefited from a different actress and better dialog. I liked Melanie in Working Girl which I feel was much more suited to her. She continued her throat clearing and lip licking in Shining Through but it was much less than in Working Girl. When we see older Linda in Shining Through I can't help but think how much better Melanie looked the way they aged her than the way she actually looks now closer to that age.

I found it hard to believe the actors portraying Dietrich's kids weren't really brother and sister, they looked very much alike.
