Song in Shadows and fog

There's a song in this movie which The Doors have covered. I don't know the name of The Doors song either, but they sing something like: "the way to the next whiskey bar". What I really would like to know is the name of the artist who played the version in Woody's film. Anybody?

reply

I can't help with the name of the artist, but the name of the song is "The Alabama Song' by Kurt Weill.

It's a while since I've seen it, but I think it might be Ute Lemper? she's a friend of Woody's I believe, and has sung a lot of Weill's music.

reply

According to the credits, the Brecht/Weill Alabama Song is performed by Marek Weber and his Orchestra c/o Delta Music, Inc. The Doors and Ute Lemper have both done this song as well. There is an interesting early 1960's version by Dave Van Ronk, and of course the absolute classic by Lotte Lenya.

reply

so did bowie in the 70s. but the ute lemper one is vocal, and the one in the film (Weber & Orch) is instrumental. anyway, fun song!

reply

This is late, but the song is the "Alabama Song" from Kurt Weill's opera "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny". It has indeed been covered by the Doors (but I think they called it "Whiskey Bar") and Ute Lemper. Weill himself wrote the instrumental version, which is part of the "Mahagonny Songspiel".
