1) The football coach was communicated the alumni's decision and perhaps was instructed to let David know that he should not disclose too much information about himself. After all, this recruiting situation was very unusual.
2) If David announced right from the start that he was Jewish, he would probably make no one happy. His classmates would resent his presence and perhaps not let him play football, the alumni would be disappointed that their secret was disclosed, and he would not have these two happy months he enjoyed (including meeting Sally) before his secret was disclosed by a drunk alum.
