anyone else think this deserved best picture

honestly, didn't think to much of Unforgiven, preffered Clint's spaghetti westerns.

i really think this was the best movie of 1992, and i can't see why unforgiven was so highly rated.

reply

Yeah, Scent of a Woman should've won best picture. Unforgiven was kind of violent but it was still a good action-packed movie.

reply

I've yet to see Unforgiven, but I'm a general Clint Eastwood fan (for his Dirty Harry films and some of his westerns) so I'm glad Eastwood won something.

But regardless, this is a helluva film. I'd say it shoulda won but the prob is it's the only best picture movie i've seen outta the nominees for that year

"I'm your huckleberry."-Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone

reply

i honestly can't see any hype for unforgiven.

its just your average western.

The best film of 1992, for me, is between Scent of a Woman and The Last of the Mohicans. Unforgiven is a solid film, but it's not great filmmaking or particularly memorable.

If I'm being objective...

Picture - Scent of a Woman/The Last of the Mohicans
Director - Michael Mann
Actor - Denzel Washington (Pacino should have won long before this, but he was still equally deserving)
Actress - Emma Thompson
Supporting Actor - Wes Studi/Gene Hackman
Supporting Actress - Marisa Tomei
Original Screenplay - David Peoples, Unforgiven
Adapted Screenplay - Bo Goldman, Scent of a Woman
Cinematography - The Last of the Mohicans
Art Direction - Howard's End
Costume - Bram Stoker's Dracula
Sound - The Last of the Mohicans
Film Editing - The Last of the Mohicans
Sound Effects Editing - The Last of the Mohicans
Visual Effects - Death Becomes Her
Best Makeup - Bram Stoker's Dracula
Original Score - Trevor Jones & Randy Edelman, The Last of the Mohicans/Thomas Newman, Scent of a Woman

I think this movie 101% deserved an oscar for the best picture.Since 1928 till now, there are many movies that were awarded oscars for the best picture and really deserved it,but in the list of 81 movies that won best picture oscars, there are even some average movies that you say how can they give oscar to this movie.Sometimes Accademy dont give justice to the movies that really deserved an oscar.

reply

Unfortunately the only two nominees from that year I have seen are Scent of a Woman and A Few Good Men. I love them both but Scent of a Woman is one of my all time favorites and it would have had my vote.

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.

reply

Nah, Unforgiven did deserve to win

reply

wow! It woudld have been tough as a Oscar judge that year!
Unforgiven, Scent, Last of the Mohicans, a few good men, glen gary glen ross, malcom x
what a year!!
Sometimes the Oscars get sentimental. I liked Scent to win but it felt like it was Clints last western so I see how he got the nod.

It was a win because of all his westerns really not just Unforgiven.
Just my opinion.

reply

It was a very good film, but did not deserve the Best Picture Oscar. In my view, the Best Picture that years was "Howard's End", and James Ivory, its director, should have received the Oscar. I also would have given the nod to Vanessa Redgrave in Howard's End over the totally insipid job done by Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny" (do they give Oscars for being sexy and peppie?).

reply

just in the spirit of honest debate i really do disagree. im not one of those retards you find on here who slag off your taste in movies first chance they get, i just think that this movie is a little one-dimensional (imagine it without pacino!!) and corny. just my thoughts.

reply

I agree I think from that year the best films were Scent of a Woman and The Crying Game. Eastwood deserved the director but unforgiven was good but not good enough to be best picture in my opinion, and his best stuff was yet to come. but in all i would have given the best picture to scent of a woman.

and for the record if anyone was cheated that year it was Alec Baldwin for his role in Glenn Garry Glenn Ross, the other pacino of that year.

Simply this film was not good enough for Best Picture. It was noted for Pacino's performance but as the years go by, it comes across as rather bland.

Its that man again!!
