After being nominated and snubbed so many times, it seems the Academy needed to get Al a Oscar and this movie had Al at his best. Notice, he hasn't won any since? He should of won for Serpico.

Yeah, roles like this are surely Oscar-bait. Play someone with a handicap. Play it very well. Good chance you'll get at least a nomination. I'm a bit stunned that Pacino hasn't got any since, though, because he was superb in Carlito's Way (1993), The Devil's Advocate(1994), Donnie Brasco(1998), and Insomnia(2002).

Pacino won two Emmys after this. And honestly, his performance in TGF2 was the best I've ever seen in an actor yet he was ignored, I don't give much credence to the Academy.

He was great in Serpico, and he also should have won for The Godfathers 1 and 2, ...And Justice for All, and Dog Day Afternoon. Just my opinion.

It's true about the Academy's excessive attention towards handicapped people. I think the movie Tropic Thunder even mocked the Academy for it -- Hanks in Forrest Gump, Penn in I Am Sam, Crowe in A Beautiful Mind come to my mind. If you include actors' portraying minorities too, then the list grows even wider!

They probably gave Pacino this Oscar more as a lifetime achievement than as a commendation of his performance in this movie; how weird would it have been if Pacino never won one? I've never heard anyone call this performance his best one.
