Davey's grandmother

Is it somehow signifigant that Davey the skinhead has a German grandmother? Or am I just reading to much into the fact that Davey the skinhead is of German descent?

hard core at your door

reply

Its obvious his origins have helped Davey to get on the "right track" but I don't think it makes any serious significance beyond that.

reply

I agree with sairus-tro's comment but I would also add that because of his German origins he may have felt more interested in, and entitled to be significant part of, a skinhead/neo-nazi gang like Hando's.

reply

I found it poetic that the more "moderate" skinhead was the actual german. maybe it has more significance than we see?

(btw, the woman who played his g-ma had a terrible german accent, guess they couldn't fit a real one into the budget)

The term Aryan actually has its roots in the Middle East and Asia, and even in its more modern usage is not indicative of a Germanic or Nordic heritage/ethnicity, as you have stated. An accurate picture of the Aryan race is one of Northern European or Western Asian decent. More specifically of Caucasian skin pigmentation. This includes the Germanic and Nordic people you spoke of, but should also be broadened to include white anglo-saxons, Eastern Europeans, and Western Asians (Poland, Russia, et al.).

You do have a point about not all "skin-heads" and neo-nazis fitting into this Aryan mold. Hell, why should they? They are ignorantly following the teachings of a half-Jewish Austrian fascist. Talk about a walking contradiction.

In the scene when Gabe goes to Davey's Grandmother's house and she notices that all of the patches are removed from his jacket which she states, "Your jacket, it doesn't look right without all the patches". Davey's response is, "It's my grandmother's place, I don't want to upset her". The theory I've always had for that scene is that since Davey's grandmother was a German immigrant to Australia, she probably grew up in Germany during Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich's rule of Germany and for Davey to be a Neo-Nazi, that's probably like a bad experience coming back to haunt her. Which is probably why Davey told Gabe he didn't want to upset his grandmother by being a Neo-Nazi Skinhead.

reply

or maybe when she see the patches she remembers how great those days were as being part of the Hitlerjugend and how crappy her life in australia is as a crazy crank who bred sausage dogs.

I don't know about the whole german thing, but I got the impression that Davey wasn't as into the whole neo nazi thing as Hando was, I think Hando was his best mate and Davey just fell into the whole Neo Nazi thing because thats what Hando was doing and he was probably quite young when they got into it, it was probably all he knew.

I think that's a fair assessment, I noticed in Davey's room at his grandmother's place there is an article about ska band The Specials on the wall, suggesting before he met Hando he was perhaps more like the original skinheads who were into ska and reggae.

"With a smile as bright as sunshine
She called me through the poster
And welcomed me aboard"

I remember when I was watching this on video with my friend back in the day he remarked during this scene that it would be funny if she was actually a German Jew.
