What river or rivers were in this movie?

My husband said the river fished in this movie is very polluted. Does anyone know what river was filmed and if it is indeed polluted?

reply

It is the Blackfoot River in Montana and yes, it is very polluted as a result of mining companies not adequately cleaning up after themselves and hazardous materials leaking into the Blackfoot and many other rivers. The book Collapse, by Jared Diamond goes into more detail about it if you are interested.

reply

I am reading Collapse just now and Diamond's mention of A River Runs Through It is what brought me here. Great book so far!

The river this takes place on and the river this was filmed on are two totally different rivers.

reply

Identify your sources. Since this movie was released, I read in various publications that it was filmed on the Black Foot and Clark Foot, both in Montana.

reply

The Clark Fork is the correct name; I ought to know, I live on it.

Nothing exists more beautifully than nothing.

reply

It was actually filmed near Bozeman though it purports to be about the Missoula area (where the Clark Fork is). Both places are beautiful (at least in the summer), but the Bozeman area is truly breathtaking. I think this movie does a great job of capturing the West's wilderness in the early decades of the 1900s, and everyone should see it!

reply

Well...there have been several locations that have been mentioned but everyone is forgetting the famous seen where the brothers are "Shooting the Chutes" It was on my gradparents property outside Livingston Montana. Trust me the area that that scene was filmed is not poluted. It is some of the cleanest water in Montana, but I am not aware of the other locations water quality

They must have traveled over half of western Montana. Last summer I spent one of the best weeks of my life at a ranch in McLeod on the banks of the Boulder and they told me that the false casting scenes were filmed there. they also had attached to the wranglers cabin a deck that was used in a scene that didn't make it to the final cut.
My memory of the shadow casting sequence and what I saw on the river leads me to believe they were right and at least part of the film was shot on the Boulder.

From everything I can gather on the internet, the river scenes were shot on the Madison, Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers - all which are within one hour or less of Bozeman. I actually live about an hour from Bozeman and have rafted and fly fished on the Yellowstone and Madison rivers. However, I have not been able to pinpoint the exact spots for the shots, although the rivers do and can change over time. In fact, I rafted both these rivers within the last week, and am taking my parents on a Yellowstone river raft trip this weekend. Next summer I plan on rafting the Blackfoot and Clark fork also, when the flows are higher.

I was in Livingston in June and was told that much of the film was made there. I assume that the Yellowstone River was the setting for some of the scenes.

OK... So the movie (and book) mostly take place in Missoula, and the surrounding areas. (blackfoot and clark fork rivers) (though, anyone who actually fly fishes missoula, knows it would probably be the blackfoot, as the clark fork is too deep, and rapid to do much good fly fishing... especially south of the milltown dam (which was just removed a few months ago).

The filming of the movie, however was done around Bozeman. Mostly on the Madison river, though my angler friends say it also partly filmed on the Gallatin River.

Both are beautiful places to go. I live south of missoula, but Bozeman is a nice town too.

reply

NO NO NO... this film was filmed on the Boulder River south of Big Timber, I would know cuz I live there and the Boulder is not polluted at all, but the real Blackfoot is

"In the novel, Maclean casts flies and reels in trout on the Blackfoot River near Missoula, but the film was shot mostly on the Gallatin River and in Southwest Montana. That was partly because the Blackfoot was not as pristine as it once was." - Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Sunday, February 26, 2012.
