Class of What?

I recently watched this movie first the first time as part of the Atomic Wedgie Collection. I noticed that Stan Grable introduced himself as Class of 1980 to the University Alumni guy, and Lewis Scolnick said he was the Class of 1981. The first movie was released in 1984, while true it could have been filming in 1983, Lewis was freshman in that movie so he would have been the class of 1987 or 1988 (right after the Nerds II movie ended) and I think Stan would have alredy been near graduation in that movie so he would have been the class of 1983 or 1984.

I don't think the movie took place in the late 70s because the most of the cars and computers were all from the early '80s. Heck the showed the old Atari 2600 I had as a kid and that didn't come out until 1981. So did the writers of this movie screw up or did or the movie was based in 1977 or somewhere around there despite the technology and music featured in the movie.

reply

I think they messed up because in the first movie they are playing Thriller and that came out in the 80s.

Not to mention that in the beginning of Nerds 2, the scrolling text says: "In 1984, the Nerds Revolution began on the campus.......... Obviously, it was a big continuity error on the part of the writers and filmmakers, but I'm suprised that none of the actors didn't point it out and try to have it changed. But on the other hand, Nerds 2 took place on 1987 so assume they graduated in 1988. Nerds 3 was made only four years after 2. It might have seemed a little far-fetched to have Lewis sellout, become so successful and be head of the computer science department in the short span of 2-3 years.

There is also a reference to 1984 in the Tri Lam house, they are sitting at the table and there is a calender on the wall that says 1984 on it.

So what I told you was true... From a certain point of view

reply

A trophy labeled 83 can be seen at the Alpha Beta party in the beginning.

reply

They were referring to the year in which they pledged Alpha Beta. Within fraternities, the year that follows your name is your pledge class year, not your graduation year.

reply

The Lewis would've pledged in '84...they just sped up the times with number three...its a common thing in the movies.

reply

Well, you're right about Lewis being in the pledge class of 1984. I have to agree that no mistake was made when Stan said "Class of 80," but the line should have been, "Stan Gable, Pledge class 1980." That would have made things clearer.

reply

Yeah, that has to be wrong because the first movie does take place in 1984. There is even a calendar on the wall in the Nerds house that says 1984. It is when Booger and Takashi are playing cards and Booger tells Takashi he has too many kings. I think they just rewrote the history of the earlier films to fit it into it being a new generation.

reply

I think we really need to get to the bottom of this

reply

Heck the showed the old Atari 2600 I had as a kid and that didn't come out until 1981.

The Atari 2600 was released in October 1977 under the name Atari Video Computer System (VCS).

I questioned this too, I used the logic that the original movie was set in 1983 or 1984. With that being said, there is no way Stan was class of '80 and Lewis was class of '81. Than I thought, maybe they were saying what year they graduated high school, but that wouldn't make sense either. So, yes, they messed up the time lines on purpose to favor the idea that Stan and Lewis were much older in the third film. I too, think that in the third film they changed the setting of the original movie to the late 70's,wouldn't make sense. Think of how useless PC's were in 1983-84, they were even more useless in 1977, because personal computers were in their infancy, they were just starting out, they had a long long way to go. Yes the nerds were smart but not that smart, and beside all the scenery, cars, music, ideas, clothes, dialogue scream 80's. You have to really turn off your brain in order to accept the idea that all that happened in the first movie somehow happened in the late 70's, it's a plot device for part 3, that's all.

I just watched Nerds III for the first time last night and I don't think it was so much a continuity screw up by the writers but instead they intentionally ignored the time frame of the first Revenge Of The Nerds movie, which certainly took place in 1984. The writers tried to have us all forget and ignore the year 1984 for the first film so that they could advance Lewis and Stan in age for Nerds III, by having had them graduate years earlier. The Friday The 13th films did this too with their time frames in the sequels but it isn't so obvious as it is in the Revenge Of The Nerds films. However, the people who would watch Nerds III are usually the fans of the previous Nerds movies and not so much a new audience and the writers should have kept this in mind.
