Was he an actor? I thought he was an undercover cop learning how to fit in with the bank robbers so he could become part of the heist???

Anyway, I did find those scenes when he was practicing to be one of them tiresome after awhile. In fact, I find most of the movie tedious for this very reason. The only reason why I never wrote it off completely was the massive payoff in the third act. It had one of the best payoffs in movie history.
