Love this movie

I never heard of this movie in the US and I went to the cinema about 3 times a week while off work for an illness in the 90's. I loved the films of the 90's, there were so many good ones, all hitting theaters so you had multiple choices for weeks on end; they were in theaters for much longer periods back then, so I could catch two at a time. I believe the 90's are now known as 'the movie generation" for the amount of movies produced that hit the theater back then. They weren't spending mega bucks on block busters leaving little movie for indie productions back then, so indies were plentiful.

I saw this about 10 years ago on a late night cable channel and was surprised at how much I loved it, all the plot twists and turns so you never really know who the bad guys are til almost the end. Makes it more suspenseful, a favorite genre of mine. I thought it would be a western as do many others I presume, who then pass it up.

Never a fan of Lara Flynn Boyle, I watched it anyway and enjoyed her performance..but the best of all was of "that guy" J T Walsh (RIP Mr Walsh). For your info a "that guy" was coined in a magazine article I read about character actors who when you see them you go "Oh that's 'that guy", what's his name. Yet, you never know his name; less prevalent with the creation of IMDb. JT has a good body of work for a life cut short too young.

It was fun watching Nicholas Cage in this in the "innocent" villain role. I shan't say more about the plot not wanting to spoil it for others, but if you like your suspenseful Coen Bros type of movies, this movie is one to add to your collection, I have.

The Coen brothers were very much inspired from the noir genre of cinema. John Dahl has been too. Unfortunetly I don't think that his movies were box office hits. However I think they were very good. 'Red Rock West' I think is his best. The movie is very in tone to the classic 50s cinema.

One of the best "neo noirs"; Cage is a great chump in the Tom Neal, DETOUR tradition. And J.T.Walsh with Dennis Hopper as a murderous duo...
Semper Fi will never have quite the same effect on me after this.

He could not help being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Boy, it's a small town !!

You should like "The Hot Spot" from Denis Hopper and "U-Turn" from Oliver Stone, 2 great movies of the same kind!

reply

Yes they are also my favourites. It is difficult to choose between the two.

Red Rock West was made in 1992 in Arizona and Montana on a budget of $7 million.

Ahhhh, the 90's..my fav movie making decade. So many great indies were made that you could sit through a couple a day and go almost every day of the week to the theater and never run out of good movies to watch with great stars. Low budget films allowed them to make more of them. I miss those days.. :(

I've seen this a couple of times on TV. I like it.

"Hey! Ladies! That was fun!"

Great movie. I especially admire the scene when Cage is racing against the train. Wonderfully shot. Hopper is screaming at the same time. It just gives me a adreneline rush.

reply

Indeed. The sex scene with Cage and Lara Flynn Boyle is soooo sexy IMO.

"Hey! Ladies! That was fun!"

reply

I would say so. However Boyle had a good toned body.

Great movie. I really like it

Cage, Hopper and J.T. Walsh are all excellent. Lara Flynn Boyle is beautiful in this and she turns in a good performance as well

8/10 is my rating

Cage and Hopper are really the highlight of this movie. However the plot is what makes this movie unique to a certain extent. It is different angle to the conventional noir. But in regards to Flynn Boyle, doesn't her character make you want to hate her ?.

reply

Hate her? It only proved how talented Boyle was. Suzanne was the quintessential noir femme fatale; Beautiful, mysterious and seductive but projecting just enough vulnerability to draw you in so that when she reveals herself to be perhaps the most evil character of all, you're dumbstruck.

She was the true highlight for me. Before RRW, I'd only see her play the sweet girl-next-door type roles... and the hilarious Stacy (i.e. Psycho Hose Beast) in Wayne's World. :)

Boyle did some femme fatale dry runs in some episodes of Twin Peaks, when putting on Laura PalmerĀ“s sun glasses & clothing.
