There is a scene in this movie where Brandon Lee's character says something to Powers Boothe's character in chinese and its not subtitled. Powers boothe asked what he said and the other guy says "He said he thinks he's in love." Call me crazy but for some reason I don't think thats what Brando really said. Can anyone tell me what he really said?

well i'm not chinese...i do not know the language (cantonese) since i only have 6.25% chinese (i am filipino) in me...although, i heard 2 words...on what he said..it was "Pok Gai"...NO OFFENSE to people who speaks the language but...as far as i know, it means either "bastard", "go to h*ll", or the 'F' word.....well yeah....Ok!

Jake basically said "F you, foreigner." Then the police asked him "do you want me to translate for you?" Then Jake grabbed his crotch and said something like you can j*** me off.

Very cool man thanx alot. Me and my friend have been trying to figure out what Jake was saying for a very long time. It is interesting to note the correlation between Jake's Father and of course Bruce Lee. I love the line Mace Ryan (Powers Boothe) says to Jake: "Why don't you take those fists of fury of your outside, your making the poor man nervous" Only Bruce Lee fans would get that reference.

There's another very similar scene. Remember when Jake was sneaking into that sweatshop factory by mixing in with the crowd? He was disguised with a pair of big black-rimmed glasses, and he was smiling kind of goofy? That was also a reference to Bruce Lee's "Chinese Connection" (Jing Wu Men). There is an almost exact same scene where Bruce disguised himself with the same glasses to get into the Japanese embassy as a telephone repairman. He sported the same goofy grin to get pass the guards.
Again, only Bruce Lee fans will get that reference.
Thats Right! Totally! I've seen those movies a hundred times but never really made that connection. By the way in that scene where Jake is in the Laundry Factory why does one of the guards yell at him to "Shut-Up & speak English". Is he speaking too fast?

I dug up my old VHS copy over the weekend and gave it a go for the first time in years. I got a DVD copy on order and is coming in the mail.
OK, in the laundry factory scene, he was still speaking Cantonese to the guard. Must say, its not as bad as I thought earlier. I mean, he still sounds like a foreigner, but its "legible" speech. I lived in H.K. for about first 10 yrs of my life, so even if I'm not an expert in Chinese, I can tell what is passable.
Anyway, the guard stops him, it goes something like:
Jake: "Mr Wong recommened me for a job"
Guard: "Shut-up and speak English"
Jake: "Oh thank-you boss, thank-you boss"
Guard lets him go....
But he never did speak English in that scene. Its interesting because if you look at Brandon's bio on IMDB, in the trivia section, it says that he was fluent in Chinese (Cantonese) as a kid since he partly grew up there.
Cool Man Thanx. The DVD has a some special features w/ cool interviews w/ Brandon Lee and his Stunt Coordinator Jeff Imada. Brandon Lee was in a movie called "Legacy of Rage" that was shot in Hong-Kong. Brandon speaks Cantonese through out the film but it was rather slow w/ few hand-to-hand combat scenes. Like you said he did grow up and go to school in Hong-Kong. I've heard Brandon in an interview once say that his Vocabulary is good but lacks in proper training I assume. Another interesting note in Rapid Fire was in the end fight in the laundry factory scene there is a guard that starts to use the Nunchaku's like Bruce Lee and Brandon quickly disarms him w/ a towel. To me as someone who has studied Martial Arts (i.e Hung-Gar/Wing-Chun/Praying Mantis) for the majority of my life it seems that the simple way is always the best and most effective. The fight scenes in Rapid Fire are real gritty and show a realism that most "Martial Art" films don't have. So to have some sort of fancy weapon like the nunchakus is gonna be disposed of real quick. Its like Brandon was saying when he threw the towell "I'm not my father, but I will still kick your butt my way"! Very Cool. Thanx for coresponding w/ me there is not a whole lot of people who are die hard bruce/brandon lee fans. Do you like "Showdown in Little Tokyo"? It is a little campy at times but it has alot of really cool fight scenes w/ Brandon. Thanx again bud!

yeah, I noticed that nunchuk scene as well. And yes definitely another Bruce reference. What are the chances that a modern day dug lord would arm his guards with nunchuks??? LOL! BTW, its awesome that you've studied all those styles of Kung-Fu. I wanted to learn martial arts in my teens but never really stuck with anything for long. Kinda the same with my piano lessons too. =) Now, I'm too old for both.
Man, the Rapid Fire DVD had interviews with Brandon?? That's way cool. I can't wait till my own DVD comes in the mail.
BTW, I loved Brandon in "Little Tokyo". Even though Dolph kind of had the lead role, Brandon was more interesting to see. No offense to Doph fans, I liked him in Rocky and Punisher. But Brandon was definitely faster on his feet. He fights more like a martial artist. Dolph fought more like a big guy, (like Arnold) using the advantage of size and strength. I do have the DVD for that movie. It was funny how they made Brandon's character the more "ignorant" one. Still think its funny when the girl was preparing the dagger to commit "harakiri" (?sp), he casually tells Dolph that she's just "cleaning-up or something". That's was precious.
Man, I missed Brandon as an actor. Although I'm not a martial artist, I had some similarities to him. We're about the same age, and we both spent the earlier part of our childhood in H.K. So, when he passed on, it felt closer to home for me.
Hey, how did you like The Crow? I liked it less than his other films cause we didn't get to see his face much. And the fighting was not very "Kung Fu" since he's this supernatural figure. But it seem to have finally struck a chord with American movie-goers. Too bad it came a bit late, like Enter The Dragon for Bruce. But to quote Highlander: "Its better burn up, than to fade away". They'll for ever be legends...

The cool thing about Martial Arts is that your never too old to learn, same thing w/ music! You should check out youtube and just put in Brandon Lee and surf through the diferent pages. There are alot of cool interveiws and stuff of him. "Showdown" was great just for the dialogue alone. Any special features on the DVD? I just have the VHS of that one. "the Crow" is def. one of my favorite films of all time. Not just b/c Brandon is in it & he was killed while making it but just b/c it, to me, was just a great film. I was a huge fan of the Comic-Book and they really did a good job to staying true to the comic. Brandon wanted to shoot the film in black&white but due to the reality of Hollywood they couldn't, so the director Alex Proyas shot it in such a way to almost make it feel B&W. I would of liked more Kung-Fu in the film as well but unfortunately the character of Eric Draven didn't call for it. He was no Jake Lo! BTW Bruce's name in "Game of Death" Was Billy Lo! Maybe Jake was his Grandson or something!LOL One of the lines I like in "Showdown" was when Brandon tells Dolph:"So these guys have been pissing you off for along time?!"-Priceless! Have u seen any of Shannon Lee's films? I own a copy of "Enter the Eagles" which has great action sequences. Shannon is really an excellent Martial Artist as well. Nice Highlander Quote from The Kurgan. Are you a Highlander fan as well? I am a die hard H.L fan and love all the films except for the second one and I love the Series as well w/ Adrian Paul. you're right about age. I think my biggest obstacle is perseverence, or lack there of. I'm usually on breaks at work when going online cause I'm not setup for internet at home. And at work they won't allow installation of any unauthorized s/w like Flash. But when I get a chance, I'll check out the youtube you're talking about.
When I say I didn't like The Crow as much as Rapid Fire, I still like in general as a piece of entertainment. Just not so much a martial arts genre movie. I loved the gothic look of the entire film, and the tragic hero character was played out very well by Brandon. I'm not a big comics guy but I do love all the Marvel movies that came out in the recent years. I collect a lot of action figures, and thus my callsign: toyguy. =)
I don't think there was any interviews in the "Showdown" DVD. Its one of those cheap versions with only a cardboard cover and not much contents except for the movie.
Yup, the last name Lo was gonna be my next Bruce Lee reference too. Billy Lo and Jake Lo was too similar to be a co-incidence. I guess this one is more of a tribute than a reference.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen any Shannon Lee movies. I saw her in an interview on TV once and was struck by how beautiful she is. But didn't even know she's in showbiz, much less a martial artist. That's cool! How accessible are her movies?
And yes, I'm a Highlander fan. Like you, I enjoy the Connor MacLeod ones the most. The Adrian Paul (Duncan) series and movies are OK. HL2:The Quickening was a big slip up on the part of the script-writers. It was such an intriguing idea that Immortals just existed among us, like freaks of nature that happens for no apparent reasons. Then they put that SF outer space connection to the Immortals origins in part II. Notice how they kinda side step that plot in all subsequent movies. I'm hoping to complete my DVD collection for HL soon. As it is, some are VHS, some are DVD.

Cool action figures man. My roommate has that same Crow one. Very Cool. Yeah I live in San Diego. I'm surprised you don't come to the San Diego Comic-Convention. Its the biggest in the US and they have tons of action figures (really obscure & hard to find as well) for really good prices. Not to mention they have every conceivable Action/Martial Art movies for sale. If u have relatives in the area u should look into coming to "The Con" It only comes around once a year and is coming up @ the end of the month, but its something to think about. People from all over the country & Canada come flocking to it. Check it out online if u get a chance. They also have tons of celebritys and movie premiers & Q&A sessions as well. Its def. worth planning a trip to at some point in the future. I ran into Quentin Tarantino buying Anime' DVD's right next to me and we had a 10 min conversation on Kill-Bill. Def. one of the best higlights.
Check out Shannon Lee on IMDB, but to find them I would suggest buying online or unless u find some sort of obscure Anime store that imports Action movies in ur area.
Cool that ur a Highlander fan. I have some films on tape and some on DVD. I have most of the seasons as well but still in the process for making it complete. I have Duncan & Connor's Katana sword as well, thats the coolest thing about my H.L collection./ Myspace is like an online comunity where people have there own web-page per se' and you can easily communicate w/ eachother. Cool webpage, my friend! I can see you are a real martial arts fan! Wow you have the Katana's from both HL? Cool, are there any pics of them posted on your myspace or another website? I was travelling within Canada a couple of weeks ago and saw what you're talking about for the first time. A HL Katana with that carved bone/ivory handle, probably simulated material. But still goes for $500!! So I passed. But they did have a Rapier beside it, reminds me of the "Toledo Salemanga (?sp)" sword that the Aman immortal character used. Well, it was sitting next to the Katana anyway, and costed only $100.

Again, if you have time. I collect mostly Eastern swords but this will be my second Western one. They're all just for display and mostly cost $50 to $100. The one that I call "Hero" sword and the Qin Dynasty style ones cost a bit more. Not sure if sword replicas cost more or less the came in the US. But man, couldn't afford the HL Katana that I found here. I mean, I have another Katana that looks more like Kill Bill, not exactly of course.
Speaking of which, you met Quentin?? Yeah, Kill Bill 1 & 2 are great! They are not heavy on the art of dialogue like Pulp Fiction, but the action is pretty good. Beatrice's costume in Vol I is obviously another Bruce Lee tribute. But I really enjoy Vol II, especially the Pai Mei scenes.
So, Quentin like anime? Yeah, I heard about Comic Con in San Diego. I haven't been to Ca since the 90s. And haven't been to visit my relatives in San Diego since the 80s. But heck, Comic Con would be a perfect opportunity to re-establish these ties. Only I'm a married guy, so going anywhere these days takes planning. Like way in advance. =)

They have a sort of plastic/resin faux ivory handle, but the detail on them is way cool. My favorite is Duncans's Katana b/c officially the series doesn't sell the same design. They were around $100 ea. not too bad. I'll put some pics of sometime on myspace and show u.

shareThe only word I knew the meaning of was "Gweilo" in reference to being white. There's some other movie that I saw awhile back that covers what it means. Even though I can't remember what movie it is, for some reason that term stuck with me.
However, I think it plays better without a subtitle. Obviously he's telling him to F' off in so many words, but the comedy works better when the other cop says that it is a term of affection. It leaves it up to the imagination of what Jake says.
