Why was this film such a Box Office Flop?

I didn't see it at the theater but my folks did rent it when it came out on video. Most people I talk to have never even heard of this movie. Why do you think it was such a box office flop?

reply

Most likely because:

1. It was a movie about child abuse.

2. It is quite depressing viewing.

3. Let's face it, irregardless of how you believe the ending (or the whole story), the tale is a tragic one.

4. There were better family-oriented movies released during the early 90s (Cool Runnings, Home Alone, Jurassic Park, Dennis the Menace etc) that made more of a positive impact.

5. Tom Hanks was big, but not huge then. (Forrest Gump still being two years away).

6. There was *beep* all magic in it.

Stupid to respond to an old imdb post but Cool Runnings, Jurassic Park, and Dennis the Menace came out a year after this and Home Alone came out 2 years before this. So, those movies aren't why it flopped. Also I vaguely remember catching bits and pieces of this on TV back when I was a little kid in the early 90s and all I remember is that they escape in the wagon at the end. I'm not so sure I want to watch it as others said it's depressing.
