Afrikaans the Taal

I'm not sure if I really have a point in this, but are there many Afrikaans speaking people on this board? I'm Dutch/Australian, and Frisian was my first language, Afrikaans fascinates me because I hear little bits of all my native languages in it, (Frisian Dutch English.) Do any of the Afrikaans speaking people on this board also speak Dutch, or understand it when it's spoken? Do any of you know what Frisian is?

Hi, Echolalia, I'm Dutch/Australian too, but I don't speak Frisian. English was my first language, but I've learnt the general tongue, and I used to be fluent when we lived there (for a year), but I'm not so good now.

And yes, we're studying The Power of One for English, and I recognized quite a few words.

I'm a nurse in the UK but grew up in KZN... one night we had a rather inebriated Dutch speaking gentleman in A+E, neither he nor his friends could speak English but speaking Dutch and Afrikaans slowly we both managed to understand each other enough that I managed to get a full medical history off him and have a good conversation (he was a happy drunk). Don't know about the Flemish, never heard it spoken.
