Disappointing Film

Perhaps I would have had a more favorable impression of the movie if I hadn't read the novel first. The movie didn't begin to do justice to the book.

The novel is about Peekay's development into an extraordinary young man, and about the people and events that had a profound influence on that development. The story takes place in the environment of South African Apartheid, but the focus is firmly on Peekay, with Apartheid as a backdrop. The movie turns that relationship around and becomes primarily about Apartheid. Many of the characters and events so important in the novel have been substantially changed or entirely left out of the movie. Doc's character, for instance, is a pale shadow of the hugely important figure he is in the novel, and that's what disappointed me most. The relationship between Peekay and Doc is central to the entire story and I expected the movie to be truer to that focus.

I suppose this is a decent movie to evoke outrage about Apartheid, and the changes to the characters and the story may have seemed necessary to produce that effect in the limited 2 hour period. But if you've read the book and are more interested in the characters created by Bryce Courtenay than the environment in which they find themselves, I think you'll be disappointed.

I haven't read the novel, so I can't give an opinion based on that. However, I loved the movie very much, and I think that even If I read the novel (which surely would give me a different perspective) I would still love this cinematographic version.

So alll I can say is that I am glad I watched the movie first, because that way I know for a fact that most likely I would love both should I ever read the book.

big disappointment. Power of one? What power. do not get me wrong I am not hating on the movie... Good cast, some nice scenery shots, but this movie is about a boy who gets tortured and bullied his whole life, grows up to watch everyone he loves get tortured and bullied with no payoff, nothing uplifting and he gains no power, helps to move no cause and is a sad depressing downerof a movie..
simply not great not for me.. if it had a nicley constucted ending with an upbeat or any type of positive theme or message i would or could reccommend..
5 stars out of 10-skip and watch somthing else

The Movie makes me cry. And not from its emotional side.

They took out ALL the key points of the movie. There was nothing in the movie that explained the details of the "Judge" and PK's relationship. Also, while i'm at this part, PK. Peter Kenneth Keith in the movie. In the book it stands for Pisskopf. Which is Afrikaan for Pisshead, which is a nickname given to him by the Judge. And THEN! And THEN they had the gaul to take out the quarter of the book about Hoppie. Putting him as a coach at the end of the movie is utter *beep* and leaving out Jackhammer Smit *beep* the ending of the book to pieces so they couldn't put that in the movie either.

My advice: do what they're doing to Steven King's IT. Scrap the *beep* movie, and film a bloody decent mini-series, putting ALL the book in it.

your advice while sounding good, it didn't work. They took Bryce's book Jessica and made it into a two part mini series. Same thing happened, changed stuff, left stuff out. Bryce's book Potato Factory, same thing.

Just because they turn something into a mini-series doesn't always mean that they keep everything in it the same as the book. I was absolutely disgusted with what they did to the script for Jessica and it is my favourite Bryce Courtenay book!

I agree. The film had gone on only for few minutes when I already hated it. There was nothing left of that great novel, but some weird stuff about a weird gilr smashed in. The only good thing about this movie is that it reminded me about how wonderful the book was.

Wait! Does this also mean putting out doesn't get you love?

I agree, it was painful trying to watch this movie after reading the book.
I was wondering, how did Bryce Courtenay sign off on this???
If I read a script defacing something which meant so much to me I would have to tear it up. Forget the money - I would not be able to sleep at night.

Book adaptations always differ. They are two different mediums so changes are bound to be necessary.
