...where the main character is killed by the antagonist girl, but the antagonist fakes her despair so convincingly that the family actually starts treating her like their new daughter?

I saw that movie ages ago and can't seem to recall the title. It's definitely a 90s or 80s movie. Any help appreciated!

I don't think so. Your description sounds similar but not entirely accurate to this film.
