What drug was Griffin using?

He poured drops from a timy vial into his mouth about 8-9 min into the movie and one or two other times. Any guess what that was supposed to be? It looked like he took it off his secretary's desk.

reply

I'm pretty sure it was just breath freshener.

reply

I think Robert Altman says it's something from Japan in the commentary, but I couldn't find the line by scanning a few scenes at the studio where he uses the drops.

reply

Found the scene right after Griffin gets the Humphrey Bogart with a gun postcard. Altman says it's vinaka or something like that. Tim Robbins knew an executive who used it and thought it would fit his character.

reply

It's called Binaca. It's a breath freshener spray.

reply

But he pours it onto his tongue like drops. It doesn't look like the product on Amazon either. It's a tiny vial. Binaca looks like a crayola marker or deodorant stick.

reply

Look more closely (try the Criterion blu-ray if you don't already have it). It's a spray. Before CFC's were banned, Binaca came in small aerosol bottles. But he's basically using it with the marker cap removed, which looks like this: http://aqualabtechnologies.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1000x1000/61ad37984e2743568c3b2b5db69bacaa/a/l/alt_1-12-13-11_1.jpg.

Binaca was much more popular as a breath freshener back in the 80's and 90's.

It's much smaller than that more like a fingernail or the tip of a thumb. I got the Criterion Blu-ray for $20 when it came out at Costco.

reply

Thank you for setting these nitwits straight. I'm LMAO at people who think that Binaca is a drug or that it comes from Japan. These are the people who no doubt support Donald J. Trump.

reply

I tried, but they don't believe me.

reply

Nobody said it came from Japan. I thought Altman said that on the commentary but maybe it just sounded like a Japanese name. And no, I don't support Drumpf.

reply

Binaca. It's a hilarious tic/affectation to have.

It doesn't look like the product sold on Amazon. He is pouring it onto his tongue from a tiny vial. Binaca looks like a small crayola marker or a deodorant stick.

reply

But it wasn't always like that. It used to come in spray or drops. Trust your elders just a little.

reply

Yes. He is using drops like I said. And the vial is tiny like the size of a finger nail. I thought it sounded like some Japanese product, a mistaken guess. Thanks.

reply

LOL - exactly! we were there -- it was a thing -- there were commercials -- there were jokes and satire -- it was in the zeitgeist.

There may have been an even smaller bottle than this, but this is the smallest I found if the link still works.

The vial he used looked smaller than that like a thumb nail. It doesn't matter. Maybe he had bigger hands than it seemed. Maybe they used another bottle.

And in 1992, cell phones looked like this:

Not a good analogy. He uses drops, not a spray. I am perfectly aware that there are breath freshening drops so stop treating me like an idiot with Trump reference.

reply

Jesus, read this whole thread

You are dense

He calls it BINACA, IT was called BINACA

It was a very strong breath freshener that came packaged in a small bottle, you would shake a couple drops on your tongue

NOW it comes in a small plastic bottle

You don't have to stand tall, but you do have to stand up!

I have read the whole thread so speak for yourself. YOU ARE DENSE.
