What was the reason for cannibalism?

Obviously, the family was very wealthy. They could afford to eat lobsters every single night if they wanted to. So what was the purpose for cannibalism? Were they just that twisted? Can someone clarify this for me?

Probably on the lines of social commentary. The man and woman represent the conservative Reagan era which was, like them, coming to an end. The rich preyed upon the poor have-nots at that time, financially. The cannibalism is a physical manifestation of that fact. We are given very straight forward portraits of the rich and the poor, and then the symbolism between them in cannibalism.

The richer they got, the crazier and twisted they became. Money is nothing to them..
