Terrible movie

I really don't get the love for this movie. Everyone says its hilarious and scary, but I didn't chuckle once nor did I feel scared by what was going on. It felt like the movie couldn't choose what it wanted to be so it kept bouncing between hip hop comedy, children's adventure, and horror.
Not that I'm saying I don't like horror comedies. Evil Dead 2 and Bubba Hotep come to mind as all time greats, but this is just an ugly terrible acted film. It started off with a promising premise with the kid sneaking into a spooky house with two psychopaths living in it. But it just turned into one big Tom and Jerry cartoon. Mommy and Daddy characters were the most awful acted antagonists I've ever seen. There was so much ham crammed in every scene they were in, its like these people were incapable of toning it down. Shouting and hooting while running up and down the hallways got old pretty fast. The dogs were a chore to sit through because I kept wondering when they would go away, as they would keep having the same scene of Fool getting away from them, and the dogs trying to get into the walls after him.
The black kid I felt was too jokey and didn't seem all that scared for his life being in danger. I half expected him to wink at the camera and say "whatchoo talkin' about, Willis?"
The same rooms kept being shown over and over, making it feel less like a movie and more like a cluttered stage play going on. Why was the kid named Fool? Was it some sort of clever joke in there I missed? I wish we had more down time with the children hiding in the house. If they were able to hide all those years and stay alive, how is it none of them were ever able to break free of the house?
It just...all felt really bad.

Why was the kid named Fool?

I think it was just a nickname.

They were locked in and getting fed. Roach was the only one hiding since he escaped into the walls. There's a scene where Alice tells Fool how she's too afraid to go outside because she doesn't know what's out there. Perhaps the others were too afraid (or didn't realise they should try) to escape if they had been there since they were babies.

****** So says Mr. Stewart. ******

It is just a nickname. His real name is Poindexter. I'm not sure this movie is supposed to make sense. It seems to me the entire point was to be bizarre and almost dreamlike similar to "Motel Hell." I didn't think it was too bad.

Man the opening scene literally explains why he's called fool and the metaphor behind it. It's hard for me to take the rest of the criticisms seriously when something is flat out stated and yet it's also the first question of your post.

are you kidding me? I think you watched the movie without really watching it.
