Why The Irish ?

Boy in the 1990's the movie industry were all over the Irish. Besides this unbelievable film, there was the Devil's Own, also with Ford fighting the Irish and Ronin with Bean in it but DeNiro and his crew again fighting an Irish rogue outfit. I mean no IRA group ever attacked this country, but perhaps the Muslim outfits than have were off limits. Yes. I am 3/4 Irish but 1/4 English.

You do realize this is based on a book? And that the IRA really did attack the royal family? That the IRA really existed and was a terrorist organization?

reply

They make movies about a lot of nationalities, races, cultures, etc. it was just another idea for a movie that happened to be based on current events in our world. The next in the series was Clear and Present Danger which was about the Colombians. Just movies that's all.

reply

Why not the Irish?

I don't mean to be flippant about it, but there were Irish terrorists who attacked targets like the royal family and in public places where innocent bystanders were put in danger. The movie's premise -- an American tourist who interrupts an assassination plot and kills one of the terrorists -- is entirely plausible. It happened last year on the TGV (albeit with Islamic fundamentalists of course).

How old are you and where did you grow up? I was very much alive in the 70s and 80s, and grew up in a region that had a population in which probably close to 50% had Irish blood. The IRA and the battle in Northern Ireland was BIG news during that time. Despite the official line, there was big support for the IRA in local Irish communities. If they actually knew what the IRA stood for they probably wouldn't have been so eager to back them.

They stood for a united Irish state. That's exactly why people backed them!

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

reply

I know, but I doubt they wanted a red Irish state.

And let's forget the victims of British Imperialism?

it was my last summer before i started high school

i saw the IRA true colors

i was in the kitchen when a special news bulletin came on tv

the Omagh bombing 31 people murdered 220 injured

since then i found out ..

-the IRA sexually abused people
-there were safe houses for the rapists/pedophiles
-IRA members who murdered a police officer got a standing ovation at the Sinn Fein political meeting
-IRA leader Gerry Adams knew a bank was going to be robbed

And your evidence that this happened? Your evidence that it was proven? Typical American. You guys went to war in Iraq because you believed what you were told on the news leading to the murder of thousands of innocents. You'll forgive me if I don't take a lesson in war from a murderer. A great nation indeed!

How do you even know the person you responded to is American. Typical Brit projecting your insecurities on Americans.
