Characterization of Ben

I don't understand Ben's lifestyle. With such a high IQ, and so refined, shouldn't he fraternize with a higher social class?

OMG we arena't all needful to stay in our social class.
I suggest you read John Steinbeck's Cannery Row for an exposition of the oppotunities when one doesn't look to classes.

I have read John Steinbeck's Cannery Row. Classism in cultural, even regional. Have you ever been to India? Or the U.K.? Or the Eastern United States where "new money" classism exists? And watch the ad hominem. It's never a way to engage in civil discourse.
Regarding characterization, he could be bored with the other characters or his love interest. But, as you point out, there are exceptions such as Charles Bukowski's stories with a blue collar postal worker. I was simply wondering if he felt as though he were a pariah, not only because of his history, but because of his inner sybarite.
