Has anyone else in the world seen this movie???

C'mon now! How could you miss this introduction to Helen Hunt!? Wow!

reply

This was hardly her debut, but yes, I've seen it. Wish it would come out on DVD.

reply

Yeah, you're right. Not her first movie. However, it was the first movie I'd seen her in, so it was my introduction to Helen Hunt. Anyway, a great actress.

reply

this movie sucked.

helen hunt was goo in it i guess. her performance was promising for things to come. BUT eww this movie stank.

the camera work was dodgy. the lighting made it seem like it was from the 80s. andrew mccarthy was pretentious and unlikeable and kelly preston played that skanky character she always plays in movies. and how predictable was the story?

the build up of mccarthy's and hunt's relationship was not strong. i hardly believe that they fell in love over taking photos together in a day.

reply

I loved this movie. Hope its released on DVD soon.

I have to agree, this movie was really bad. And Andrew McCarthy (although good in Pretty in Pink, just cuz it was a favorite high schoolers movie in the 80's) he's not a good actor... and because of that, the movie really blew, had there been someone else more better skilled at acting & more handsome, (how about the hunk from 16 Candles?), it might been a "cheezy early 90's favorite)

reply

I saw this movie and loved it also. Wish it would come out on DVD or even VHS

I didn't think the movie actually stunk, but I agree with most of what you said, ammiel, and kudos to you for such an accurate review :).
I never found Preston to be naturally skanky myself, and prefer her in roles like "Nothing to lose" and "Holy man" much more, not to mention "Twins." But somehow, her character fit this this movie, and to this day I never even remembered that slutty girl to be Kelly Preston. I actually thought, maybe Marisa Tomei, is more likely to have portrayed that very role.
And about Andrew, I don't know much about him at all, but I don't think this is the type of role that fit him well. I see John Cusack as being the guy for this, rather, or possibly Robert Downey Jr, though both have had their excellent share of 80's films. Yet, their inclusion in this might've liften it high above the 5.5 stars it got.
Nontheless, watching the '94 version of "Only you" with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey might change your mind about this film, possibly in a good way.
And... I'm out.

I know you posted this 2 years ago, but just today I found a copy of Only You on DVD at my local bargain store, for the ridiculously high price of $AU2.
And strangely only a month ago I found an old VHS copy in a thrift store... Hadn't heard of the film before this, so now my life is complete.

reply

Yeah, I've seen this movie and I also like it. It's not a personal fave, but if they released it on DVD I'd probably buy it if it wasn't too expensive and I had some cash to burn.

Had seen bits and pieces of this film in the past, but finally saw the whole thing from beginning to end about two weeks ago. It was cute. Andrew McCarthy is adorable and I think the film contains one of Kelly Preston's best performances.

reply

This movie really really sucked! I just watched it today and my first thought was how embarassed Oscar winner Helen Hunt and likable actress Kelly Preston must feel when they look back at this steaming pile.

reply

Wow, I didn't think it was bad as all that.

reply

I just saw this film a few weeks ago. It wasn't all that bad. The script was predictable and the dialog was corny, but for some reason I thought it was a cute movie...although I was surprised it was made in the 90's...because the fashions and style of the movie screamed the 80s.

reply

It did look like an 80's film.

reply

I am actually watching it right now...........it is a few minutes into the movie............i originally saw this a long time ago but i kind of forgot about it until i was looking for a movie to watch and found it On Demand.....

reply

I also saw this movie and I remember being confused at first because whenever I saw the plot of "Only You" it referred to another version and I even started wondering if I had actually gotten the name right hehe. I don't think the movie sucked that bad but it certainly wasn't a GREAT movie. But it had its cute moments. I certainly liked it more when I was a kid in the 90s that now that I'm 20.

reply

its alright. just one of those older movies that was low budget and has its moments.

reply

Yeah, not only have I seen it but I was IN it! But I got cut out, the scene I was in is when McCarthey walks in to the bar after falling in the pool and EVERYONE stops and just looks at him like he is crazy for going in the pool with his clothes on and then walking into the bar. BTW, that scene was shot at 4 in the morning. Because of the film being released directly to video, the screen is just not wide enough to see me. Televisions today have letterbox screens and wide angle high def so I probably can be seen. Also the film was shot at the Mandalay Beach Resort Hotel on the Oxnard Shore in beautiful, sunny Oxnard, California.

reply

I saw it but i cant see any more movies anymore....because i tore my eyes out.

reply

I used to love when this movie would come on HBO on a sunday morning and I would not get out of bed till it was over. Ahh the memories.

reply

I've always like this movie.

Death Sentence on DVD-January 8th,2008

I just watched this after finding it on VHS for 99 cents in the clearance bin of a video store. It's adequate entertainment, but could have been much better. The clock was winding down on these '80s-type romantic comedies by 1991. 5/10 stars from me.
