De Niro was the one good thing about this movie. He was extremely entertaining to watch. The rest was *beep*

AVOID!

I actually came across this movie on TV the other day and found it pretty entertaining. Not bad if you're a big DeNiro fan like me - other than that though, it's nothing special.

It was good.

Lange is beautiful. De Niro is charming. The bad guys are menacing.

I don't know why it has such a low rating.

reply

The original from the 50s is far more superior.

I just found it free on my cable on-demand. It's not a "great" film but worthwhile if you're a DeNiro fan or if you've ever fanticized about risking your life to pursue a dream (e.g. fooling around with Jessica Lange...)

I also stumbled across it on cable. First thought: A DeNiro/Lange film I never heard of? It must suck. And it pretty much did. Plot's about a guy who's got everything going against him, major problems everywhere he turns, beginnning to end. How can you enjoy a story like that?

Chemistry between the leads not there - as good as she is, Lange can't play frumpy or dowdy or even regular, which is what we were supposed to believe she was if we are to beleive she's chasing DeNiro's loser of a character. She's just too attractive for that.

You know me. I'm the same as you. It's two in the morning and I don't know nobody.

Actually i very much liked this movie and thats why i rated it with 8/10.

DeNiro is great and very funny and while Jessica Lange is not at her best the rest of the cast is rather good i must admit.

The strong points of the movie are its scenery of mid nineties New York and its plot.

Overall a highly enjoyable action packed comedy with a pinch of drama in the end.

You saing that Lange played frumpy/dowdy in Postman? No. That character was written and played hot.

They will tonight.

Watched it recently one sleepless night on early morning cable.

Not a bad film, good cast who seem to fit this script especially Cliff Gorman and, Jack Warden who was a boxer before the Navy, Merchant Marine and the U.S. Army 101st Airborne in the Battle of the Bulge. Gotta like Jack for nothing else but those credentials. He still had the moves in one scene here where he takes on a young guy who is giving him some grief.

Reminded me of an urban "The Postman Always Rings Twice", must be a Jessica Lange thing.
As mentioned, good shots of downtown NYC.

See the original with Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney. Masterful film noir, with characters that bleed with realism.

Just watched this, it was okay. Some bits actually made me laugh out loud, which was surprising as I wasn't expecting much. De Niro plays an uncharacteristic hustler/loser role - kind of like a cross between his Rupert Pupkin and something Dustin Hoffman would be more suited to playing. De Niro tries to get animated but it's not really his thing. Jack Warden is probably the best thing about the movie.

reply

It is worth watching. Not only is DeNiro good, but so are Alan King and Jack Warden

reply

It's a decent movie. The best part is the strong supporting cast - Alan King, Eli Wallach, and especially Cliff Gorman and Jack Warden. Also makes good use of New York locations and has a New York feel.

reply

The only thing I can say is the cast is better than the movie deserves. They're all great, but the film was all right. Without the great cast, it'd be a pretty weak film.
