Missing Verse from 'Carrying the Banner'?

I haven't seen Newsies in ages, but I did watch a little on YouTube. Was the second verse of "Carrying the Banner" cut from the movie?

reply

Yes, it was. If you watch the Making of Newsies documentary on the DVD you can see the little scene.

Thanks, I was getting myself confused as to whether I'd actually seen it in the film or not--turns out I didn't.

It's on the soundtrack...I'm assuming this is the one you are referring to?

Jack:
It takes a smile as sweet as butter

Crutchy:
The kind that ladies can't resist

Racetrack:
It takes an orphan with a stutter

Jack:
Who ain't afraid ta use his

Kid Blink:
Fist!

reply

Omg haha isn't that in the movie??... *blush* *blush* haha I hadn't even noticed... I guess I have just listended to the song so many times I have just presumed it was there... lol how embarassing... I have seen it like a lot this past half year, but never noticed that... hmmm....I am gonna notice that next time...

reply

same deal, when i listen to the soundtrack i always sing it--and i think--"I saw that in the special features, but it's not in the movie." So i concluded that they just sang it while jumping over more barrels. Yeah, kind of feel weird...hm.

I think there were some scenes/segments cut from the music numbers. Did you see Jack Kelly doing the dancing with the lasso trick while he was singing 'Santa Fe'? It was in the footage for the 'Newsies! Newsies! Read All About It', but I don't think it made it into the actual movie. And I think Christian Bale did a lot of work on that...

There was also a bit where one of the boys sprayed water on a man kissing a woman, in 'Carrying the Banner' perhaps, but I don't remember seeing that in the movie.

As long as there is space, I'm going to stare off into it.

reply

Oh, yeah. I remember the hosts of that being like "We all worked hard, but Christian had something extra to learn." Then I think he talks about how riding a bike is hard at first and kind of compares that to the lasso.

This actually WAS in the movie originally. I remember it clearly, and it was jarring to see it gone later on DVD, after having listened to the soundtrack so much. I am not sure how I saw it before it was cut. Being a Disney Cast Member, I may have seen it as a cast preview type of thing. Or it was still there during the theatrical release, and cut for the home video market. I saw it only once in the theatre, anyway.

reply

You're a Disney cast member?

Yeah, it's weird for me too. Everytime I listen to it, I sing it and when I watch the movie, I get confused a bit cause it's not there. So like another poster said, I sing it while they are jumping over the barrels. :P

I saw Newsies 5 times at the movie theatre and it was NOT in the movie when I saw it at the theatre. Sometimes they don't cut stuff out until they preview it for an audience first. I really wish they would do an uncut version of the movie available on DVD for us newsies fans.

I believe it was in the theatrical release, which I saw 11 times. I remember the staging very clearly.

reply

because they didn't want to make that scene that long so yes they took out the second verse!

reply

This can't be right? I know there are like 3 versions of Carryin the Banner, but I have Newsies on DVD and that verse is in the film.

reply

Yes it was cut, however it was on the soundtrack. I can't tell you how many times I played that CD throughout my childhood haha :)

reply

Wait, it's on my DVD...

If it's on your DVD, you have the GOLDEN DVD. I just checked mine, and sadly, it's not there.
