Christian Bale hates this film?

I don't know whether this is brought up or not, but why does he despise this film? Is it because it's the lowest grossing movie or what?

I heard it has to do with the singing and dancing...the fact that it's a musical

Singing? Probably. Dancing? Probably not. He did Swing Kids after this.

Booooo. This is an incredible movie. One of my favorites. I think it's just another example of how great of an actor Christian Bale is. And a forgotten treasure. I suggest this movie to everyone I can and pretty much nobody's heard of it. Even though it's AWESOME.

reply

It's because when he signed on it was a drama...When he got to the set Disney had decided to turn it into a musical..In Bale's words "I was terrified" but he threw himself into the 10 weeks of rehearsals cause ya know dedication...But yeah, He didn't enjoy doing it at all.

reply

Wow, do you have a source on that? I'd be interested to read about that. If that's in fact the case then I'm quite impressed with his ability to adapt. And frankly, I can't blame him. I remember liking this movie as a kid but I've recently seen it again and it really is quite bad. Major cliches, mostly poor performances, poorly staged and silly dance number, lame shallow songs, etc. And Christian Bale, impressive for his effort, was terrible singing in this movie. It makes a lot more sense if it was sprung on him like you say, because his acting and accent were always on point, and surprisingly he was able to handle the dancing, but he could barely get through the songs. They were awful. Then again, nobody actually sounded good (Bill Pullman), but hearing Christian Bale try to belt out the Santa Fe song was pretty painful.

Oh well, I imagine he's ok with his career after this movie. And I suppose it was fortunate for everyone on set that he was younger when he hated making this, because last time he was unhappy on set everyone really got an earful. Maybe he was too timid on the Newsies set.

That outburst on the Terminator set in summer 08 is a lot more complicated than "He was unhappy" there is a story to what happened, It's not a 'diva' situation if you think that..A lot of sh&t went down in the month up to that outburst not just on set but in his private life too, and he had a very 'human' moment during a particularly stressful period.

What makes him a good guy is the complete responsibility he took for it immediately, the amends he made to the DP, and then when the tape leaked a year later doing it all over again in public not just once but 3 times..That's what makes him a good guy.

Listen He's not gonna spend his life making up for yelling at someone 5 years ago, anyone that still judges him needs to judge themselves too cause it's hypocritical to tear into someone for doing what everyone has done at some point in their lives, Those who claim they've never yelled or got really angry at a particular point would in fact be liars, We've all done it, only difference is, ours aren't recorded so we can listen to ourselves and judge accordingly.

Next time i advise you to look further into things the media put out there, educate yourself to the facts and don't just grab headlines, It's amazing what you learn when you dig deeper. The media agenda is always 'sensationalist'.

As for the 'newsies' info, Oh Sh&t there's some..i think some comments in some interviews on 'Youtube' i can't for the life of me remember which ones though. You'll have to look yourself...I also think there's a print interview a few years after Newsies..He was shooting a 'Jane Campion' movie with Nicole Kidman and talked a bit about what happened with Newsies.

You're best just googling 'Christian Bale Newsies comments'

Actually i like Newsies even more today, It's just fun/catchy/heartwarming/nostalgic, It's not an Oscar movie and it's not horrible either, I never understand why people get swayed by critics, I've seen worse musicals TBH.

Remember Christian was really young in it, it doesn't hurt his career at all, In fact many people have affection for it, It just shows his versatility as an actor, That's 'musical' added to his legacy/CV and he never has to do it again, LOL which he won't ever cause he hates musicals.

Anyway he's already proved how good he is..Seriously the guy's incredibly talented and deserves all his awards/plaudits, he can do anything he puts his mind to, he was a good little mover too, LOL Did you see those Ballet moves he was doing and his singing voice was fine for what it was...The guy isn't a singer so it's not really a big deal either way.

Every actor in the world has their 'old shame', He could do a lot worse than Newsies, Irony is, it became a huge hit after the fact, Weird how these things work, Bombs at the box office cause the 'musical genre' is not in fashion at the time, Becomes a huge hit on video, makes it's budget back and a profit too, LOL then becomes even bigger on DVD and then a tony nominated stage musical,

Nah, Christians fine, he's a huge Oscar winning A List star..Don't think he's shedding any tears do you?? :D

reply

I don't know about an official source for what he said but you can tell that in many of the scenes how uncomfortable he is singing and dancing.

Ok... Settle down guy. Talk about overreacting to an off hand comment.. jeez. I don't need to educate myself on anything. He lost his temper on set and yelled at people. I just made a little note of it, but you went on some diatribe about how people are hypocrites for judging him. Aren't you getting a little carried away here when I'm complementing him?

"Actually i like Newsies even more today, It's just fun/catchy/heartwarming/nostalgic, It's not an Oscar movie and it's not horrible either, I never understand why people get swayed by critics, I've seen worse musicals TBH."

Why assume I was swayed by critics? I saw the movie again and that's why I decided it was bad. Not based on anything I read.

Ok.. I've already said I was impressed at his effort and his dance ability. His singing was bad.

Yeah, it certainly does have a cult/nostalgic thing going for it now. I know a lot of people that like it still.. Though I doubt many of them have seen it in years.. But the memory is still strong for many.

"Nah, Christians fine, he's a huge Oscar winning A List star..Don't think he's shedding any tears do you?? :D"

No I don't think so. I don't know why you would think I would think so. All I said was I impressed at his ability to adapt even though his voice was bad. Not sure why you feel you need to crusade to defend him, but I didn't insult him.

reply

Sorry didn't mean it to sound like i was attacking you..My bad if the comments came across hostile...I'm just a passionate person and don't tend to hold things against others for things I'm guilty of myself.

It's not a crusade or anything, I just get a great deal of joy out of Newsies and movies like that, Ya know, that nostalgic feeling that brings your inner child forward.

It doesn't matter to me if a movie is perfect or not, I guess I'm in the group that feels the flaws give it more of a charm.

To watch the movie today, for me at least, make me miss the 'old style' Disney musicals..A fun plot with catchy songs and chemistry.

I guess i respect Christian even more for his work ethic here..He was terrified doing this but pushed through anyway..Me I'd probably cry and vomit in fear...If i got to set to make a drama and i was told we're gonna sing and dance instead..Oh God just thinking of it..ground swallow me now. :(

He sang in Empire of the Sun. I'm guessing he danced in Swing Kids which came out just after this.

reply

Did he heck sing, his singing voice was provided by James Rainbird, Bale merely lip-synced.

reply

They were all good. Are you trolling?

reply

Lol did you just make up this answer?
That's not true at all. Christian Bale KNEW from the beginning that this was a musical.
It's why he was cast. He's always been a singer, since he was very young - check out his choir singing in Empire of the Sun. It's amazing.
And whoever said that Bale hates this film is wrong too.
He has nothing but fondness for it.

reply

That's not true at all. He felt the movie killed his career early on and he had to work his way back from it. I think that's the major reason he's distanced himself from the film, for a good 15 years it was seen as a total disaster and he wanted nothing to do with it. To be fair that's a pretty normal reaction from an actor, especially so young.

However, even before the stage production took off, Bale is quoted as saying Newsies has a loyal fan base and that "If you say something bad about Newsies, you have a lot of people to answer to." He even hummed a bar of Santa Fe during his press tour for The Fighter.

He's "given his blessing" to the stage adaptation and has said he's sure whoever is playing his part is capable of doing a better job than he

If you look older than 18, this Emmy winning director/choreographer wants nothing to do with you. If you are, or look younger, than he will be all over you and you better know that he is going to try and get you to have sex with him. If you don't, he will just sexually assault you until you can push him off. Just ask the stars of that cable television movie franchise why they won't make another installment even though their careers could use the boost? It is because he gets to decide if he wants to direct it and they had enough of his terror to last a lifetime. Do you remember that blind item I wrote a few weeks back about a movie that this foreign born former A+ list superhero made back in the day and how the whole set was just people having sex and being out of control? Guess who worked on that movie and tried to have sex with everyone? Yep, this jerk.

Director/choreographer: Kenny Ortega

Cable television movie franchise: "High School Musical"

Former A+ list superhero: Christian Bale

Movie: "Newsies"

I wanna know how much truth there is to his claims of there being a pimp/prostitution ring operating within the set of Newsies, seems a little debauched for a Disney movie.
