Freaked me the hell out!

Wow, am I the only one who totally got freaked out by this movie? Everything after (and including) "The Last State" seriously gave me chills. It was like a really weird nightmare. I loved it, though. What a creepy and surreal movie.

You're not alone. When I heard the premise I thought this was gonna be a Disney-type movie. How wrong I was.

You hit the nail right on the head. I'd seen a few parts of this movie when I first became aware of it, but when I watched it all the way through from start to finish, it wasn't quite the "kiddie's" film I thought it was-in fact, I thought the overall tone of the film was quite dark, and a lot of the characters where quite unpleasant.

So this is how liberty dies-with thunderous applause?

reply

Yeah, this is one of the dark and usual movies, kinda quirky and thus original. As soon as they showed two guys tossing out a drunk into a creek smashing him up against the rocks in the process- that set up a tone for the movie right there! I thought, hell no, this is no Disney kiddie movie!

Currently watching it in 15 minute batches. The only movie I can compare it to is 'Six String Samurai.' Not quite a post-apocalyptic 'Mad Max' type, but a post-rational road movie. The kid carries the whole thing in a bravura performance, but went into other directions and grew up. Coulda been one helluva Oliver.

Where can I watch it? Does Drew Barrymore get much screen time?

Drew has less than 30 seconds of screentime. Her name is promoted on the box cover like she has a major role likely for marketing purposes. Jordan was a relative unknown child actor at the time so his name wouldn't help sell the film. There are actually alot of well known character actors in the film like Robert Picardo (Star Trek Voyager and The Wonder Years) and a few well known music celebs like Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Meatloaf. Most of them are bit parts though.
