So Underrated!!!

This is one of the funniest and most clever and insightful films about those folks down there in La La land. Really terriifc and so much better than The Player and The Big Picture.

I agree! This is one of my favorite movies, totally underrated. I don't remember it being in the theater back in 1992 but I know it gained more of a cult following when it was released on video. To this day, I've screened the film for friends and family who all enjoyed it. Landau was amazing, as was Jace Alexander and even Wuhl, who I never really liked, turned in one heck of a performance. DeNiro and Aiello were perfectly cast. Even the old pro, Wallach, was great.
I really enjoyed the artsie/indie feel of it, and at the same time it had the right amount of star power to carry it so that it wasn't a low-budget snoozer. One of my favs!

The following scam comes from The Sting, Part 2, so NOBODY knows about it!

it was only releaes to a handful of screens in nyc and la in '92. its pretty good and quite clever and the central premise where everybody is like "i'll fund your movie but only if you cast this woman"--i'll only do something for you if you do this for me...that's too true i'm sure and there are a fair number of sequences that stand out by themselves ...the scene with Walken jumping out the window (that was this movie right?) is a stand-out for me personally-- this makes a good companion piece with Whul's other satire but of TV--a very little known film called "Open Season." (where the nielsens accidently record pbs as the highest rated channel and execs try to copy pbs style shows for their own networks...again he takes a good concept and works in a number of good ideas that could work on their own. Joe Piscopo as Hamlet!)
YOU KNOW thouhh as well done as this movie is--as funny and as many great guest appearances that are here-- i wouldn't say its as good as The Player...The Player is amazing and works on many levels (its Crime and Punishment for modern times) that's an amazing movie! this one is good but its not as brillant i think as the player.. (and the big picure was christopher guest's first directed film!)

...and yet it's only getting a 5.2 IMDB rating.

it's so true that hollywood sucks!

i too would have to say that, while i think this film is superior to "the big picture," it does not have the breadth or dramatic weight (and not just because it's a comedy) of "the player." still, i can't believe the low imdb rating it has (which, again, just goes to show you not to put too much stock in ratings/rankings); or that it's not bettter known (its "indy" status, notwithstanding).

and one thing's for sure (really for sure): as good as it is, that's how inappropriate its title is...
this is one of the most inappropriately-titled films you'll ever see!
"mistress" does no justice to it, nor does it tell you much of anything about the nature of the film.

Great post, besctu.

Much better than the drab, bland, yawnfest, boring post of "The story is very predictable." above yours. What a maroon!!

This is not that predictable of a film. You are crazy!! Great movie.

A 12-year old Benjamin Linus just brought me a sandwich. How do you think I'm doing?

I agree this is a great movie. I especially loved Sheryl Lee Ralph and Jean Smart. Hilarious.
