Playoff seeding

There were 10 teams in the league, with the top 8 making the playoffs. The Panthers got the measles, and forfeited their season. The Ducks tied the Cardinals, then beat the Huskies, giving them 3 points versus the Huskies 2 and earned the last playoff spot. But one thing that doesn't make sense is that they didn't play the Hawks in the first round. In most standard eight team tournaments, the top seed plays the last seed in the first sound, then 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5.

My theory on why this happened: The Hawks had to forfeit every game Banks had played for them. Assuming they had two games left, they still won both games and made the playoffs as the 7 seed (they would have two wins vs the Ducks 1). That explains how they ended up on opposite ends of the bracket.

I've done way to much research on this.

10 teams in the league, everyone playing 14 games. Top 8 teams make the playoffs. Panthers forfeited already.

Thru 12 games:
1) Hawks 12-0, 24 points

8) Huskies 1-11, 2 points. Most likely they beat District 5.
9) Ducks 0-11-1, 1 point

Since they only play 14 games, each team will play 5 teams twice, and the other 4 once.

When the Hawks forfeited their 12 wins, The Ducks would gain 1 or 2 wins. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they were about to play the Hawks when Banks was pulled off the ice. So at best they would gain 1 win. If the Ducks and Huskies each gained one win:

The New Standings

7) Huskies 2-10, 4 points
8) Ducks 1-10-1 3 points
9) Hawks 0-12 0 points.

Assuming The Hawks win both their games without Banks, the final standings:

7) Ducks 2-10-1 5 points
8) Hawks 2-12 4 points
9) Huskies 2-12 4 points

Hawks hold the tie breaker over Huskies, since they split their games, but the Hawks won by more goals.

If the Hawks had to forfeit their first 12 games, though, wouldn't all their opponents be awarded the wins for these games? Not sure how much that would change the final standings.
And the way I interpret it, the Hawks still played Banks in the penultimate game (against the Huskies?) as they figured they'd sort things out with the league. They didn't, so by playing him after they'd been explicitly told not to, that's when all their games to date (including the penultimate one) were forfeited....then again, that would mean their record would be 1-13 at best, so they wouldn't make the playoffs at all. Damn.
