The dog...

I saw this film for the first time last night and it blew me away. It instantly became my favorite of the Mariachi trilogy. After watching it I checked out Desperado to refresh my memory since I hadn't seen it in a long time. I noticed they never explained what the hell happened to the dog (Or to the bike, for that matter).

That's my only complaint about this excellent and wildly entertaining bunch of movies.

Well it seems like Robert Rodriguez doesn't care about continuality so the details may not be as important as the rest of the film so i guess he left it up the viewer's imagaination

Continuality???? 

Since the people who have seen El mariachi are few and far between, i doubt he thought it mattered much. Desperado was more of a remake then anything else anyway

if you're that interested...

read "Rebel Without a Crew".

It's Rodriguez' book which is essentially his journal of making, distributing, etc... this film.

And yes, he really did sell his body to science to finance the movie. Now that's what I call serious about filmmaking!!

given what that drug study enabled him to accomplish, I would say it was a very smart thing to do.

reply

the drug testing wasn't as bad as you'd think. RR said in an interview all they were doing was testing drugs that they knew worked but just wanted to monitor how well they worked. as for the dog, the mariachi was setting out on a revenge spree trough mexico so carrying a dog around with probably wasn't a good idea so he prob jst gave it away and traded the bke for more guns.

reply

I like to think of it like that. He met a nice person along the way who could take better care of the dog than him, and he pawned off the bike.

Clearly; El got hungry.

He had a rough trip through Korea.

The dog went the same way as the missing dog in Gladiator...

When El leaves town, he has a wierd mechanical hand, he has the letter opener and the bike and the dog. NONE are seen in the other movies. His hand is blown to pieces in the first one, and in the rest it's barely a scar.
But whatever, Rodriguez may well be the best filmmaker out there. I can't wait for grindhouse.
The Mariachi trilogy is intended to be the mexican dollars trilogy.

reply

"Mechanical hand"? It was his natural hand wrapped in duct tape.

reply

Maybe one day, he'll do a fourth film to answer the remaining questions in the trilogy, like what happened to the dog, what was Carolina's connection Bucho & Marquez, etc.

I think he sold the three of them, the dog, the opener and the bike.

Kickass move.
