Better than Desperado?

I thought it was a much better put together tale and I felt for the characters more in this one.

Despite the fact that this was done on a much MUCH lower budget and doesn't contain action that's as exciting as Desperado, I still feel that in terms of quality, this is better than Desperado. Indeed, you do feel for the characters in this more and get a sense of intensity as Mariachi runs from Bigoton and the rest of Moco's goons.

However, I grew up watching Desperado alot and it's a big favorite in my immediate family as well as my friends, so naturally I love Desperado more and watch it most out of the trilogy, despite the fact that reading 'Rebel Without A Crew' is what got me into filmmaking.

Agreed. Desperado is great but El Mariachi is better, it's a story with a lot more heart. But I didn't care for Once Upon a Time in Mexico at all.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Yeah I actually do think it's better than Despeardo.Desperado had better action but Mariachi had a better story.

Yep! Desperado was OK but El Mariachi pulls you into the story and doesn't let you go. Should be watched in Spanish with subtitles as the English dub just comes off as goofy (which is the way Desperado came off to me the first time I saw it.)

Been a while since I've seen Desperado but I agree plus Azul was a bad ass character. All the actors looked like real Mexicans to which was cool not actors all dolled up like the sequels. Just guys you would see if you walked down the streets of Mexico.

Well, for me, the two are pretty different from each other.
El mariachi's plot focuses on a man who got mistaken for a crime syndicate with a guitar case. No unreal (still cool and badass) fight scenes like in Desperado. Kinda the most believable in the trilogy. Still a great film.
But Desperado comes in a different approach. The plot is about his revenge on all drug syndicates but the thing that got my attention was the action scene and the characters. Still have a great story. The 3rd part of the Mariachi trilogy has this approach as well.
But for me, I liked Desperado more. Nothing I've seen before.

Kickass move.

I agree, they're both good but I prefer Desperado. To me, it's too obvious that most of the people in El Mariachi aren't trained actors and that kind of kills it for me. Even in the original language version. Anyway, still El Mariachi is an exceptional low-budget debut and I really loved seeing the Mariachi guy in Planet Terror ;-D
