I saw this one in a .99 cent theater in '93. I think it's quite a good flick. Very entertaining and novel story, also very tragic. It must have been good because I can remember the whole thing 11 years after seeing it, and hell, I can't even remember some of the movies I saw one or two years ago.
I'm looking for a certain movie and I think this might be it,but I have a question. One thing I remember in the movie I was looking for is when the older Head or Superior women asked the boy if he knew any English and he knew Holy Boy and *beep* You(the last word started with an "F").Is this that movie?I really hope so!
Thank you so much for your help,I've been looking for this movie for a while!Sorry I haven't replied sooner but I've been fighting a soar throat for 3 days!I've found this movie on Half.com too!
Other posters have mentioned it, and I'd agree. This may not be the best(how subjective is best?) movie I've ever seen, but it's definitely the most memorable. The scene on top of the hot air balloon blew me away. The script, acting, cinematography, and most of all, the historical sweep of the movie is incredible. The subtext about the inevitable march of progress and the negative effects of colonialism only serve to emphasize the depth of the undertaking. If Renoir had made films, he'd have made films like this.
It's a good one, but i was totally stunned by Vincent Ward's (Map of the heart's director) following movie - What Dreams May Come. This is one of the most beautiful movies I ever saw!
it's interesting to see the posts about movies like this and 'Spirit of the Wind' and 'Dersu Usula'. I remember posting some comments on all of those films over the years and now more and more I'm seeing that these films are becoming available on DVD. I think that's wonderful. I was telling the story of this movie to some friends a couple of years ago and when I got to the end I began to well, ok I began to cry. the sacrifices people feel they have to make sometimes, the way we can imprison ourselves when we feel that we've lost what's most important to us. I cried at just telling the story but wasn't only because of the loss, it was also because of the supreme effort to overcome ones own demons and try to make a connection again after losing so much. it really is a great film and I'm so glad to see it available now.
This movie blew my socks off. If flawed its only because they reached for so much in 3 hours. I give it an 8 easily. A story that was new even with my many decades. I think I better buy it too. Just so I can say to friends...."I told you so"
Yes! I remember crying off and on for an hour after it ended. I couldn't remember the name for so long until today. I kept thinking it was something like All Around the World. Gah. I want to buy the dvd but I've read that it's edited differently and somewhat unusually, such as a dub in place of the girl's naturally gravelly voice.
I'll never forget the last scene.I was moved on so many levels. I can't wait to watch it again! Too bad they don't play more movies like this on television movie channels. I wonder when this last aired and on what channel?
