The sad little ghost song

Do you remember the song little Albertine sings to Avik? It was in her native language but it's beautiful haunting quality still came through in the universal language of music.

Then she interpreted the song for Avik when he asked if it was "happy or sad"? She said she wasn't sure but thinks it is a happy song because the two lovers were reunited in heaven for ever.

Do you agree - that song was actually the whole story of this movie summed up as a child would see it? And the story of the human heart as well?

I don't remember what she sang. But I agree with you about the ending, which we here an echo of her song. It is a mournful, yet hopeful conclusion for me.

I agree, the song tells the entire story of the film and of the human heart, from the viewpoint of a child.

The song is called Ma Metisse, which means "My Métis/My Métis Love".

The lyrics relate the story of a half-breed man who leaves his Métis wife to search for gold, they die apart, but meet again in heaven.

The song is on the soundtrack, but performed by an adult singer, Marie Pelissier, not the young girl who portrayed Albertine.

Here is the soundtrack:

De l’or je t’ai promis
Mais dans la mine sou la terre
C’est l’enfer et l’hiver.

O, ma metisse
Au ciel je trouverai
O ma metisse
L’or que j’ai tant cherche.

Ma mie j’ai tant vielle
Le corps lourd et meurtri
Et ton sourire au fond du puit
Lumine ma nuit.

O, ma metisse
Au ciel je trouverai
O ma metisse
L’or que j’ai tant cherche.

Ma mie o ma metisse
Ma vie est sombre et triste
Mes reves d’or s’en vont mourir
Et je veux m’endormir.

O, ma metisse
Au ciel je trouverai
O ma metisse
L’or que j’ai tant cherche.
