Great great movie!

I watched this the other day and i have to say that its one of the best movies ive seen in a long time. i think a lot of people might not like it, or criticize it for the dubbing, not perfect editing etc... but those types of "mistakes" if you want to call it that, give a movie personality and feel, and its something thats completely missing in todays movies. today a movie can have a horrible plot, acting, etc.. but so long as the editing and filming is good, and its overloaded with crappy CGI(side note, but why the hell are special effects getting worse and worse with the overuse of CGI, and its becoming more and more acceptable?), somehow that makes it good.

anyway, this movie had that feel and personality im talking about in huge doses. the overall look of the picture, and the mood of the whole film was its own style. but thats not the only reason i liked it so much.

you start out loving Avik, and all the way through the movie you only really see good things about Avik, just an overall good person. then towards the end when you see him living in crap conditions, and depressed, you still like him, you feel sorry for him and want him to feel better. then suddenly he has an accident and dies, right at the point where you think he's going to turn things around. just a weird way to end the movie, but it leaves you extremely emotionally confused, and has an effect ive only felt from this film. plus the rest of the film was very well done, im extremely critical of love films but this one nailed it.

Well-stated. I really enjoyed it. I would've liked the ending to be a bit different and more balanced, but I can accept the filmmakers vision...though to see Avik live to enjoy a relationship with his daughter after losing years with Albertine would have been lovely!

Avik still could've been a "broken" man, but the sense of hope would've been deeply endearing. Many vets came home damaged, depressed, and lonely (often by choice), so it would've stayed realistic, but with renewed hope for his future...and his daughter's.

I remember seeing the movie when it came out and I had this thought while watching: MAN, THIS IS EPIC! (before 'epic' became over-used). And then... he dies at the end in this totally meaningless way that basically said to me: Life is meaningless.

Right up to that moment? I thought it was one of the best things I'd ever watched. But I decided right then and there to never watch it again. Not because it had a sad ending, but again... such a sweep of vision shouldn't end in such a mundane way.

Unless of course, the point of the movie is that, everything is pointless. And if so, well, that ain't my scene.

But yeah, for the first 1:59 I loved it.
