aspect ratio question

so this site says correct aspect ratio of 2.35, but i'm watching it on shotime hd and it's in 1.85. wtf?

reply

That is easy, whomever submitted the info to IMDB got it wrong. It happens a lot actually.

reply

Yeah, the DVD is 1.85:1 also...the IMDB info is wrong.

reply

Incorrect all of you

The IMDB info is correct, all HDTV broadcasts are in 16x9 1.78:1 format, and the dvd that is in 1.85:1 has been matted from the OAR

A Perfect example of this problem on another movie is Dr. Giggles

reply

The HDTV broadcast versions of this movie and Dr Giggles - are they in "true HD" or upconvertions?

Also, NC17 or R-rated? What version of MC3 did they show?

reply

I took a look at the Blu-ray (2.35:1), original DVD (1:78.1) and videocassette (1:33.1) versions.

Maniac Cop 3, like the first two, was shot open matte at 1:33.1 and cropped for TV and DVD release. The Blue-ray release is further cropped, with the center shifted at times, so as to properly frame the picture, like the old pan-and-scan videos.

Personally, I don't see the point of further cropping the image on this one. I can understand wanting to fill out a widescreen television. I cannot understand forcing viewers to stare at black bars when they don't have to. Other than consumate artists like "Alan Smithee", who wants less picture and more nothing?
