A great film! The origin of NOI, though, is a stickler, for sure...

First, the film is great. And whether you agree or disagree with what the real Malcolm X preached, or who he was, you can't help but have respect for the man. A towering figure, for sure.

With that said, I wonder if it ever bothers NOI members that the NOI was founded by a white New Zealander who was a lying schemer, at best. Or, do they just choose to dismiss it as made up to discredit them? I don't think it discredits them, just their origin. Their origin isn't who they are today, nor during Malcom X's time.

My interaction with NOI about this film and Malcolm X in general is that it is all white men lies to discredit their movement. They say that Elijah Muhammed's indiscretions were a complete fabrication by Mohammed's older son Wallace Mohammed and Malcolm X as part of some asinine conspiracy to take over the NOI. This is a great interview on the ordeal:

Point being that they try and obscure the truth just like any other cult (Scientology comes to mind) and I doubt that anybody with a critical mind doesn't know that the NOI is directly responsible for X's assassination. The final nail in the coffin for Malcolm X came after he completed his Hajj and learned that integration was a great part of his faith and started moving away from the black segregationist talk and that he sealed his doom. I firmly believe that if it wasn't a black man known for speaking out about the atrocities of the white man that it would have been an open and shut case and probably Elijah Mohammed himself may have been indicted. But the powers that be were just tickled to death to watch them murder each other.
