It sounds like a foreign accent yet he was born in Georgia and spent his entire life in the US so what up with that? Was it simply bad casting and that is the actor's natural accent?

He was his own man. He did not need the dialect of the white man or the institutionalized racism of NORTH AMERICA. He spoke the way he wanted to speak because he was a free man, not to mention dynamic.

Say what you want but any person who puts on an accent is either delusional or playing a part. You take your pick. Me? I like the people that I look up to be genuine, not phony. Not playing a part.
It wasn't the actor's accent. He doesn't talk like that in other movies that he has been in.
